My McAfee has expired!

My 1 year old XPS T450 came with McAfee Virus Scan already installed when we bought the computer. My "...free update period has expired" and I can no longer get the latest .DAT files as I was doing previously. What do I do now? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The version of McAfee that was installed on your system is an evaluation copy that was installed on your system for FREE. McAfee allows 90 days from the DELL invoiced date, in which you can download your one time free virus update. After the evaluation period, if you decide that you would like to continue using it, you can purchase updates from McAfee. For $29.95 you can get free virus updates for a full year and 1 full software upgrade within first year. Before you can download your one time free update, you have to call McAfee Customer Care at (408) 988-3832 (do not select any options, just stay on the line) to get your login ID and Password.

The following is a response received from McAfee.

If your VirusScan program came pre-installed on your computer, or bundled with software or hardware you may register at the following web address:

http://support.mcafee.com/cust_care/oem_reg.asp

You will need to enter your Login ID and Password. If you have not received your login id and password, please contact Customer Care at (408) 988-3832 and do not select any options, just stay on the line.

Upon registration you will be able to download your one-time free upgrade to the latest version. Please contact Technical Support at (801) 492-2600 or (972) 308-9960 if you need assistance.

My Dell also came with McAfee VS. I believe the 1 free update applies only to updated versions of the software. You should still be able to update the DAT files as they come out each week.

Although you can not upgrade your Virus Scanner without signing up and paying for it after the one year period is up...McAfee allows unlimited updates of the data files.

I have found that I can not access these through the "update" feature on the VShield interface anymore (My One Year period is up as well), so go to the following site to download.

Thanks Mike!
I now have the latest .DAT version using your link. If I understand your post, I can continue to do this as long as I'm content to use my current Virus Scanner. As far as I'm concerned, it has been doing the job and now being able to continue getting the latest .DAT files, it has become even more valuable. My computer is strickly for home use and I try to be very careful about opening mystery mail and attachments. I am also an AOL member and they claim to scan all the mail I get anyway, so I've always wondered how necessary the McAfee really is. It is reassuring, I guess, to run it regularly and have it confirm "No infected files found", but I really wasn't that crazy about spending $30.
Thanks again!

Regards,
Steve

Be a good time to do yourself a favor and switch to Norton's.

Steve -- you can update not only the DAT files, but also the scan engine whenever McAfee updates it. You will know when this is when you update the DAT files, since it will say "scan engine needs updating -- update now?

Why? I'm very happy with McAfee Active Shield.

Well, I notice that Dell is now offering Norton instead of McAffee which should be an indication.

There are many reports of McAwful not catching some of the nastier critters that most of the other AV's did. You are lucky if you have not had trouble with AS.

Norton at least offers a year of free updates and after is just $3.95 to keep legal or there is a back door similar to McA that you can continue to use gratis. :<)

Thanks Bob. I did know that but since I've never had any problems I'm adopting the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach.

Know what you mean, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on avoiding a reformat and just slipping along. Just remember that you have alternatives if, or when, something jumps up and bites you in the :<)
