My 5150's AC adapter does the same exact thing - it makes irregular, soft, 'chirping' sounds every once in a while. Right now, it's not doing it, but occasionally it will. I asked someone at Dell about it a while ago, and they said it was normal. I've never experienced any negative performance with my machine due to it, so I would say don't worry about it. It seems like a harmless annoyance.
The Dell rep I talked to seemed to think it was not normal. Emailed him the boards I had seen and didn't want to make an issue of it if it is normal, but I don't remember the AC noise before my new motherboard installation:o(.
Well I have 2 ac adaptors for my inspiron 5150, I used to leave one at home and one in the bag, so I didn't have to reach behind the table and plug it in.
Recently the ac adaptor died in the bag, so I have been forced to use my oringinal ac adaptor which was normally left at home. Now I seem to be getting the clicking noise.
I presume that it must be normal, but it is strange why it is doing it on this power supply and not the other one.
