I had the same problem with two Inspiron 5150's. Both notebooks required new mother boards. Only one was covered under warranty. The second mother board failure occured shortly after the warranty expired. Dell wants to charge me about $450 to repair. It seems to me that this is an underlying defect in the Inspiron 5150's mother board that Dell should acknowledge and properly address.
There is a class action in the works - and as with most of them, the firm will get millions, and the owners will get $20 off coupons for future Dell purchases.
No, it won't - it'll be cheaper for them to settle the case, admit no wrongdoing, pay a few million in fees, and offer coupons, the vast majority of which will never be redeemed.
GM did it, Maytag did it, Sony did it ... so have dozens of others.
It isn't just Dell. The demand for ever lower prices has a downside - the downside is that support quality declines, and engineering margins slide.
Every one of the major notebook vendors buys from the same handful of companies, and as a result, their notebooks are more alike than they are different. It used to be that a 3-year warranty was standard-issue. Now, if you want that, you pay for it.
yea my inspiron 5150 is about 24mts old. Recently the screen began flickering when the ac adapter was being used. I found out that it was because the laptop was switching between the battery and the adaptor. It would no longer charge the battery. I tried the charger in another laptop and it wourked perfectly. i did the same with the battery and it too works fine so my problem was in the laptop itself. by the sounds of this forum its the motherboard and that sounds expensive in every since of the word. ive alot of work on the laptop for it to just die. it isnt funny. bring on the class action.

Took the Inspiron 5150 to a local laptop repair service and he tells me it is garbage - throw it out or spend minimum $800 to replace motherboard. Furthermore, he told me that they see this problem daily and that all the other major laptop brands have repairable connections between the AC port and the motherboard - Dell is the only one that needs the motherboard totally replaced and he says "SOMEONE" out there surely has a class-action going.
Funny that we never considered purchasing another laptop because we love our Dell PC - lesson learned.
i tried the battery in another dell laptop and it worked fine. It charged and all. i then put the battery (fully charged) into my laptop and it worked fine. i just couldnt charge it in my laptop, thats all.
i found out it was the connection between the ac and the battery that was the problem. Now unfortunately i dont know anything about the inside of a computer of i would have tried to fix it myself, it would have been cheaper at any rate. Still i dont like the sound of this motherboard thing. I dont know what it is but it sounds important and therefore expensive.
Hallo everybody, last 2 months dell send me a new adapter for replacement my previous adapter due my previous adapter could not charging the battery and power battery being less from 1 hour 45 min to 56mins without running any software. After im talk with dell respective, they saying my battery had problem occur my previous adapter and they would not change my battery since my battery warranty are expired. I had a few question, if im not change my battery, would the battery will be less of the time if im still using the notebook without adapter? Or shall i change the battery? But if im change the battery, it would be RM 300 above and its about expensive. Did dell have the best price for me?
I received my new power cord (under warranty) from Dell yesterday. To my amazement it worked. Power has been restored to my 5150 at least for now. I'm wondering if I need to change my user habits. The computer is plugged in and on most of the day, even when not in use. Should I turn off when not in use to conserve power? I'm wondering what will be the next to go.
I just had this issue with my 5150 and after working with the tech support 3 times (actually an American each time) was told that it was the mother board and or CPU. Dell is no longer shipping the MB or CPU, so they are replacing the laptop with a new model, as it is stated in my warranty. I was wondering why everyone sticks with the 1 yr warranty, and doesn't opt for the extended coverage. I bought the 3 yr and it saved me from having the 2000 dollar paper weight that everyone is complaining about.
I have my Dell 5150 for 25 months. About 6 months ago (naturally after the warranty expired) I noticed the power flickering and while I was annoyed I put it down to the power cord and figured these things happen with power cords. So long as I kept the cord steady and at an angle it was fine.
Recently I got a spare power cord from work and discovered the problem was with the power socket in the laptop and not the cord at all. Since then the situation has gotten worse and I'll be glad if I see the New Year with my laptop.
I am really disappointed with this, especially as I now find many many other Dell customers/victims have a similar story and Dell have washed their hands of them in a show of extreme corporate greed that can only spell disaster for the corporation in the long term. Shame on Dell for not recalling these faulty pieces of junk. I dont expect my €2500 laptop to end up costing €100 a month.
