Dell Inspiron XPS gen. 2
Nvidia geforce Go 6800 Ultra
1gb ram
M770 Intel Cpu
latest dell drivers

I have what sounds like the same problem.  The screen will become completely scrambled and the only way to correct it is to shut down with the power button and re-boot.

It does it when either; I am starting a game or when I have exited to the desktop to do something and am going back into the game.

It is an intermittent problem and happens randomly, it also happens while playing different games from various manufacturers.

I am still under completecare warranty, so I guess my next step will be to contact them and see if they will replace the video card.  I do know it had the same problem with the old and new video drivers, nothing changed.

I have actually faced this issue  a lot on my laptop. However, let me tell you that the video card is not at all overheating or something. I have I8kfangui using which I can see that my GPu temp is only at around 48 degrees. It just happens randomly if I do ctrl Tab switching. A reboot fixes the problem. I guess this is just a issue with the mobile gpus . I dont think there is anything to worry about..

I think it is something to worry about because a computer shouldn't lock up when ctrl-tab switching. Usually it doesn't lock up and the screen just corrupts. I've found I can fix this by opening a windows command prompt in full screen (I hotkeyed this in case it happens), but I can only fix it if the computer doesn't completely lock up.

It's obviously a video issue which should be fixed.

well...I guess its good if it can be rectified. As you said , we might not be facing a complication now, but it can arise any time.

I probably should have posted this a while ago, but the 6.14.10.8430 (A5) drivers posted here on the Dell site fixed this problem (R121867).
