Usually a system is setup in bios to halt on all errors. How far in the boot process do you get before the system halt message appears? It has to be determined whether the error is happening way before windows loads or as windows is loading. If it happens as windows is loading try tapping the F8 key after the memory count or as you see starting windows. Little short taps until you see some boot options. If you can get here chose to start up in the safe mode and see if it will boot up. Then let us know what happened.

Hi dbramlet.... actually my system hang up before loading Windows 98, I have a Dell Dimension P III 450 mhz & 128 mg memory... I'm crazzy about this blue sreen "System Halted".. tha thing is that happens eventually and I can't get to checked what's wrong... & is before even loading Windows ...
Johanna,
In order to determine if this is a hardware problem see if you can boot the system with a boot disk. Do you have a win98 boot disk? If so, put it in the floppy drive and boot the computer. Do you still get the blue screen? If so, your memory or your video card might need re-seating.
