The A920’s software must be configured and working correctly (with the computer connected and turned on) for the scanner or copier to work correctly – even when using the buttons on the A920 unit. You may want to first try uninstalling all printer software/drivers, restart the system and then reinstall the printer software fresh to see if that helps.
just bought new dell desktop. just receive my a920 printer. it prints, but it wont scan or copy. the hot buttons on the unit wont work. trying to scan, copy or preview using the software doesnt work either. the printer just makes alot of noise like its trying to move but isnt. it does this for at least 3 to 5 minutes. it apprears that the scanning unit doesnt even move at all. quite a disappointment after dropping over $800. can anybody help? i have alot of work to do on my pc and was hoping to get it done in the next day. thanks
With all of the same complaints logged in the forum, you're telling me to reinstall the software? C'mon. Don't you think that I would have tried that already? I'm not the only one, so perhaps you could set this printer up in your lab and try it out yourself. Perhaps if you can repro it you'll see that we aren't all crazy, nor ignorant when it comes to follwing a software install wizard.
By the way, I just printed your reply, so as I said, I can print fine which should mean the software is installed correctly. We just can't scan or copy!
Please do due diligence and research this so we can start using this printer for more than the basic functions.
This just might be a SWAG but I had the same problem as all of you. I was using a USB 1.1 cable and never gave it a thought until I questioned myself about the problem might be a bad cable. Bought a new USB 2.0 cable, reinstalled ythe A920and all is working fine. Really don't know if it was the cable or the reinstall that corrected the problem.
after spending bout 6 hrs on my prob, i called tech support. took bout 45 min but finally got thru after couple of "disconnectd". discussed the problem. told them i was not interested in doing everything again ( reboot, dis/re-connect cables) as i had done it so many times. they shipped out a new printer to me within 2 days. will set it up later this am and try it. cross your fingers for me. dont want to go thru what shifty did. dont want to have to get a new usb cable as i bought the present one thru dell........big hastle to return it and get a new one.
i'm with u shifty..don't believe its a software otherwise it wouldnt print at all. also don't think its usb cable prob (in may case at least) because i can print...just cant scan or copy. again, the scan/copy unit doesnt move across the bed on the drive belt. it shines its bright lite and attempts to move, but just clicks in place in attempts to move. i think the scan/copy unit is somehow stuck in place....oh well...i'll let u know my outcome
just got my replacement printer after only 2 days of my initial call/complaint. hooked it up, ran the installation cd. everything's working!!! that's right, including the scanner/copier. i can scan/copy via the "all in one center" software, or straight from the hot buttons on the unit itself. beautiful!
i am now sure the problem with the first printer was with the scanning part that moves across the glass driven by the belt. it never moved across!!! it tried, but looked as if it was being held back by something. that annoying bright light (like on copy machines) would even light up, but the thing never moved. as it attempted to move you could here a machine dull click on and on for a few minutes. the new printer glides across easiy and scans text print in about15 to 20 secs!!!
Woo-hoo!!! hope this helps with your situations....good luck!!
I just unpacked and installed a Dell A920 All-In-One printer. Computer system XP. It prints fine but does not scan or copy. As with the other complaints, the scanner bar under the window does not move on shutdown or boot up. It tries to. I will be contacting Dell for assistance or a replacement.
Hey, Stephen S. from Dell ... how's that lab testing going? Most of us are still waiting for a solution, and it appears that replacing the printer doesn't help in most situations.
Ok. I got it working. Tried it on another Dell computer and it worked fine. I tried it again on the first computer, still didn't work. Contacted Dell support. She had me try several things, including deleting and reinstalling the software. Still didn't work. She had me restore the system to an earlier version, before an XP update. Still didn't work. Then she had me try running a 32-bit diagnostic (which takes about 4 hours). By the time that finished, I couldn't do anything else that day. The next day, I tried reinstalling the software and.... it worked!
I called Dell back (talked to someone else) and explained it was working now. I asked what the problem could have been. He said if the initial install did not work, and then if the uninstall did not remove all the software, then subsequent installs might not work either. Seems like lots of people have trouble loading the software the first time.
I don't know what finally worked, but it wasn't painless. Luckily I was on vacation this week and could spend an hour on the phone and run a 4-hour diagnostics, then try again the next day.
Dell: I suspect there is a problem with the installation software if it is effecting this many people.
I thought the same thing took my moms printer, the one not working, to my home, I have exact same system and the thing works so it can't be the cable. Someone needs to fix this problem there is alot of the same problem going around. I am on the third printer they have sent now.
I am having the same problem you guys are. Scanner and copier don't work at all. My bar dosn't move at all. Dell needs to get some people on this problem and come up with a solution quick. This is crazy.
