The only way to do it is to replace the mainboard and buy a video card. Given the going rate for a mainboard ($500 or so) plus the cost of a card ($200 or so), and the loss of your warranty, you'd be better off selling the system and ordering a new one.

It's not Dell's fault-the ENTIRE industry is like this with laptops. Dell is about the only company that does have one or two upgrades available for at least some of their high-end models (but then only to higher-end cards that were available as an option on the laptop).

If you want to run games, you need at least an Inspiron 9300 with a Geforce 6800.

I'm not interested in playing games on it.  I just know that  built in video  slows down overall system performance.  I just ordered a 1GB stick of ram to replace half of the 512 that came with the system.

Intel's video is okay for general Windows XP usage. At least until Vista comes along. You won't be able to turn on Vista's maximum settings.

Hey there,

I think that the nvidia is just a preferance because I have a inspiron 6000 with the ati x300 64meg of mem, and it works pretty darn good. And is fast, I just need a 128meg if that will make a difference. Also to speed up the system I have two 512 sticks of dual channel ddr2 533, not one gig stick alone. I love the nvidia card though that is what my desktop has in it. Thanks.

The x300 is super-low end. It will probably run all of today's games, but not very well (ie it'll run FEAR with low frame rates, but only with settings that make it look like a PS2 game). That's why the Geforce 6800 is recommended as a minimum. It will realistically run any of todays games AND continue running any games for a while (it's not outdated out of the box).

Ok, so I bought an Inspiron 6000 with a dedicated 64 Meg vid card. Do i have a choice to upgrade to the 128 Meg card?? If so, will I need a new motherboard like updating from the integrated graphics? or is replacing the vid card on the laptop like replacing one on a desktop?

Hey man if you have the x300 ati 64 meg then u can buy a 128meg ati, and it will fit right in. I am sure all u have to do is take out the other one and replace it with that one
