with the pcmcia card installed, do you see an enhanced usb controller in device manager under usb?

Thanks for the quick response.  No there is no enhanced usb controller in the device manager under usb.  I contacted the card manufacturer.  They e-mailed me updated 2.0 drivers...but the Inspiron 8200 was still unsuccessful in recognizing it as a 2.0 high speed port. The support group said 1 of 2 things:

1.  The motherboard on the laptop was not built to handle USB 2.0

2. The pcmcia card will only handle peripherals that are powered under 5.0 volts and since the external dvd writer I am trying to connect has 12v of power it won't work.

Does this seem right?  Even though my Inspiron 8200 is 3 years old and configured w/1.1 I was under the impression that the upgrade to 2.0 would be possible via this usb 2.0 card?  Any help would be appreciated.   I would call Dell but as luck would have it my service contract JUST EXPIRED last month!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

I suspect that if xp sees the pcmcia card and you can't see an enhanced usb controller in device manager then the card is either not an usb2 one or you didn't install the intel chipset driver if you've reinstalled. an usb2 pcmcia card should allow usb2 functionality on your 8200.

as for an external usb burner, you will need extra usb power input

The pcmcia is definately a usb2.0.  I bought a compaq usb 2.0 with an ac adapter for additional power.  I'm thinking it should work fine with the dvd burner if I can get the pc to recognize it.  Do you know where I can get the intel chipset driver?
Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the link.  I've tried to download from that page and it is telling me that the server is unavailable? http://ftp.us.dell.com/chipset/R34506.EXE
Are you able to access that page?  I appreciate your help.

Just a Final Post to this thread - The USB 2.0 PCMCIA card CANNOT be used in some Inspiron 8200 models......including mine.  The chipset used does NOT support USB 2.0.  I finally spoke with someone at Dell who pretty much told me I am scrwd and might as well buy a new PC if I need USB 2.0.  This was validated by Intel's website which has a pretty extensive library w/whitepapers on all of their products and chipsets.   Anybody want to buy an Inspiron 8200?

Thanks Dell.....!......

The most common use for a PCMCIA card providing USB 2 capability is for notebooks manufactured before USB 2 was commonly included. Check the system requirements for a typical USB 2 PCMCIA card and you will see that a variety of processors (and by inference, their accompanying chipsets) are compatible.

The chipset doesn't need to support USB 2, it needs to support the PCMCIA slot. The card is responsible for providing the interface from PCMCIA to USB 2. The same would be true for any PCMCIA card, Firewire, Wireless, Sound Card, whatever.

If the I8200 natively supported USB 2, that's what would be available at the USB ports built into the system. It's not, so the PCMCIA card is required for adding USB 2 capability.

Grey,
Thanks for the response.  Unfortunately the troubleshooting guidance from Dell, HP (PCMCIA 2.0 Card Manufacturer and Intel) tell me that my Inspiron 8200's motherboard w/the 845MP/MZ chipset does not support USB 2.0 or an enhanced host controller.  The I/O Controller hub is the 82801CAM (ICH3-M) - and only controller hubs of ICH4 type or newer support USB 2.0.  Therefore, even if I install the usb 2.0 pcmcia card the board will not be able to support the device.  I was originally led to believe that the upgrade would be easy because XP sp1.1 and 2.0 have the USB 2.0 enhanced controller device drivers....unfortunately it seems that this is not the case in all circumstances.

Any further thoughts would be appreciated.

Did you ever resolve this?
I also have an Inspiron 8200 bought in 2/2002, so I assume I will run into the same problem.  I wanted to get a PCMCIA - USB2 card so I could download video from my camcorder.  The firewire port does not seem to communicate with it correctly.
How can I confirm I have the same chipset?
Thanks!
Jay

No, I never resolved the issue. I bought my inspiron around the same time.  The bottom line is that the chipset does not support USB 2.0.  I had to do a lot of research on intels website to find this all out.  Dell help and support was absolutely useless...they didn't even know what a USB 2.0 pcmcia card was!

I wanted to do the same thing....hook up my camcorder to the inspiron and edit some dvd's on an  external HP Moviewriter that required usb 2.0.  DELL support was TERRIBLE!!!!
