Never seen a "safely remove..." for a USB, but you should have one for
an optical (CD) drive in media bay or PCMCIA Card, may be hidden,
right-click near the clock, select Properties and Customize box
to change it to Always Show.

thanks for reply,

i did that and i still have both problems, i noticed today that i cant add new hardware too

when i try to add new hardware and chose select from list the hardware list is empty too.

any idea? should i reinstall all the devices? i lost my cd with the laptop software, where can i download a new set?

Just don't lose OS CD.:)

Go to Dell Product Support; Downloads & Drivers to get the latest (or previous) versions
for your system.

There is an important proper order of install. Look on "Reinstall Guide" Product Support.

Usually must do Chipset Drivers and then Notebook System before, so other drivers install
properly.
