what do you know...I fixed this myself.  After resetting the screen size to what is recommended in the user guide and setting the refresh rate to 60mhz it all works perfectly..  Not to mention the screen is even clearer and more readable.  Sorry to bother you folks but perhaps someone having the same issue might see this and find it helpful.
