It could be overheating, or it could be collateral damage from overheating - if you have a warranty, call Dell.
If you're out of warranty, try clearing the heatsink of dust. If that doesn't work, boot in Safe Mode - if the shutdowns stop, you've got a software issue. If they don't, chances are the mainboard is damaged, which means you'll need to consider whether to invest $500 or more in a repair, or replace the system.
I took the laptop apart today and the fan runs when you first turn on the unit then shuts down and doesnt run anymore. Is this a bad fan problem or something more serious?

if its a software issue than what kind of software issue is it? cause its happening to my laptop as well i also have a inspirion 1000
