Fortunately my USBs work, but not the Video. I thought my videocard is PCI, not AGP.
Anyway, what you suggest is to reinstall chipset drivers, and after that to reinstall again VideoDrivers?
I saw in the postings exactly the same problem as mine. Did you people solve your problem or youthrow away in the bin this powerful Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Hyperthread notebook because of that stupid video problem?!
I have the same problem with an inspiron 8500 sp1. It just started doing this.
After the boot sequence gets to windows xp logo on the black screen, something turns off the video drivers. Dell says the hard ware is working fine. I may have to reinstall windows xp pro. I just don't want to lose my data. Any suggestions?
Hi Norm I am not sure that reinstalling Windows will help to solve that problem. Last year actually I got this blank screen after reinstalling Windows XP (SP1). I managed that time to make it working after 2-3 day-nights installing all drivers from DELL site (appropriate for my machine) - different versions, old and new, in all possible combinations.
At the end it started working well, and it been well up to last week - 1 year. Last week I installed SP2, expecting the same problem as last time and unfortunately I was right. I was also expecting that after fighting several days with the drivers, it will start. I did again as last year - installed all drivers - old and new in different combinations. But it still DOESN'T work.
I wrote an e-mail to DELL support, and now I am waiting for a response. This seems a very common problem, and there should be a solution
Now we are 2, so I hope that someone will hear our voices
tons of people have this problem. It is all over the dell forum site and google.
I think I found my problem. After 3 calls to dell tech hardware suppport, and no solutions from them.
I found a guy on google who suggested checking the reed switch on the keyboard. Mine is about 1 inch from my power button. It is about the size of a paper clip width. Uusally grey plastic and it sticks up about 1/4" above the keyboard. When you close the lid, the reed is depressed and the pc knows to go into standby/suspend mode. My reed is crooked and jammed in the hole. So, the pc thinks it should be in standby mode all the time. The driver is not loaded when you safe boot. So, the screen works in safe mode.
Dell is coming to repair it, with my hardware warranty. I believe you can repair/unjam it yourself checkout the dell service manual if you want.
Apparently, this is happening to a lot of Dell laptops all models. I'm surprised Dell didn't have it in their troubleshooting sequence. I'm hoping this is will fix my problem. I'll know next week. I'm pretty sure. I'll let you know.
The dell tech just left. It was my reed switch; it was jammed in it's housing. What a pain in the keyster. He replaced the hinge strip at the top of the key board, which included a new reed switch in it. I could have probably fixed it myself by looking at the service manual.
Good luck and thank goodness for the dell forum!!!
Thanks for your info. I am not sure in my case it is this stupid reed switch. Because after I rollback my Windows to SP1 (I have Ghost image before installing SP2) the computer works just fine. And also I think that if it is the reed, then I could be able to use external monitor. In my case neither internal nor external is working
What do you think about my thoughts? Are they correct? How was in your case - you lost you screen after installing something or just like that - suddenly? How was with an external screen?
You might be right. It may be a different problem than yours.
You can tell if the reed switch is stuck. Just make sure it sticks out of the console about 3/16 of an inch. My old one got jammed into the console and would not pop up.
With my problem the external monitor would work fine.
I had not installed anything. It just stopped working one day. I'm running SP 1.
Unfortuntely, it sounds like a different problem. Keep trying the dell forum. also try the Latitude video section. I noticed those laptops have similar problems to the inspirion. Take some time to go back several months in the forum. I think you will find someone with the same problem. You could also try the microsoft knowledge base.
At the end I am happy to announce, that DELL support just had fixed my BLANK Screen issue.
1) They came and replaced the video card ATI Mobility Radeon 9800 with the new one. This didn't change anything - the screen was still blank with the new card
2) They promised to come another time and to change the motherboard. So they came, changed the motherboard, and WOAH!!!! , this fixed the problem.
Nobody can explain what was wrong with the old motherboard. I am writing this, hoping that this can save many nights headache

Then you install video drivers or use windows update to "find" the drivers for the card.
