I'm also keen on such an upgrade to my 5100 so will be watching replies to this thread with interest.
Has anyone experienced any cooling problems with their 5100's or 5150's when adding such upgrades? I notice that these beasties get a little warm on hot days even when standard.
Matt - I think the term discrete means that the graphics adapter is not embedded on the motherboard. The word discrete means separate.

ONLY the ATI 9000 from the 5150 will work, and that card is ONLY available in 32 and 64M formats.

The 64M 9000 has a bad track record with the 5100. It either doesn't work outright, doesn't work well (artifacting, ghosting, etc.) or doesn't work for long in the 5100.

The only sure upgrade for the 5100 is the 32M 9000 from the 5150. You can take your chances with the 64M version, but nothing from a non-Dell 51xx (actually, Compal, which made the system for Dell) will fit.

I called Dell today.  The 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 will cost you about $107.00, the 64MB $125.00.  There was a 64MB on e-bay the other day for about 100 dollars.  I have heard that to upgrade from the 7500 to the 9000 you have to upgrade your bios.  I am usure about doing that... does anybody have advice?

Oh yeah? I can upgrade to a 128mb card? I really was hoping that was the case, but, it seems from what I've been reading on this topic here that, that may be impossible to do. Some guys are saying that it has trouble handling the 64mb from the 5150, let alone a 128 mb card. :(

Anyone try installing a 128mb card on their 5100 here yet?

Hi guys! Has there been anyone here as of late that has found out for sure if there's a such thing as a 128 mb video card that we can use in our 5100 series?

Thanks!
