I have the same problem with my Inspiron 5150 and its Sigmatel AC97 (STAC 9750) audio not working after resuming from standby mode.

There is a forum post which talks about a USB mouse triggering the problem, however in my case that was not it:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_audio&message.id=16415&query.id=246164#M16415

In my case, I isolated the problem to a FTDI USB serial converter which is part of a Belkin Dockstation USB2.0.  With that disabled, the problem goes away.

So perhaps try unplugging all peripherals (especially USB) and see if the problem goes away.  If so, add them back one by one as a process of elimination.

The problem is caused by the Sigmatel driver.  I found that if you use an Intel AC97 driver there is no problem with standby, BUT the master volume control does nothing, you need to use the wave volume control.  (I used the Intel AC97 driver that comes with Windows XP - just choose to install specific driver, and uncheck "Show compatible hardware" )

DELL, can you please release an updated Sigmatel audio driver to fix this?  The Sigmatel driver currently made available for the 5150 is quite old - there must be a newer one.  We can't get them directly from Sigmatel, we rely on you to provide them.  There are hundreds of posts on these forums from people having this same problem.
