Tim,

I am having a similar problem.  The battery won't charge, so my computer (inspiron 9100) dies instantly when I unplug it from the wall.  The only warning that I get pops up at the beginning of the boot and directs me to the CMOS.  It says something about not recognizing the AC adapter.  I am glad to see your post, because I was worried that it was either my battery or computer that was busted.

I am now going to try to get a new power cord / ac adapter.  Please let me know if you have any luck fixing your problem, and I'll do the same.

All I have done is to replace the 90W brick with another.

I am still wondering if anything can be done to salvage the first adapter.

I am getting the same error message on start up indicating unable to detect power supply type  system may operate slower, etc.  and have to push F1 to continue.

After loading all systems seem to be working properly and runs on AC power orBatery power with out any dificulty.

Why the error?
