Unable to identify AC power adapter

Question

Recently, QuickSet starting spouting this error when I docked the computer.  I am using the Dell 90W power brick that came with my d/Dock. 'Unable to identify AC power adapter connected to the docking station.  This will prevent the system from charging the battery.  Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher to the dock for best system performance.' A different message is displayed when I undock the notebook, and connect the power supply directly to the system: 'The AC power adapter type cannot be determined.  Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge.  Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system performance.' I do not see any similar errors when I connect one of several Dell 65W bricks while the system is undocked. However, if I try to connect a 65W brick to the dock, I see this message (as expected): 'A 65W AC power adapter has been detected in the docking station.  Your system will operate slower and the battery may take more time to charge.  Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher to the dock for best system performance.' I suppose this means that my 90W AC adapter is toast.  Is there any thing I can do to salvage it? Best regards, Tim ==

Tim,   I am having a similar problem.  The battery won't charge, so my computer (inspiron 9100) dies instantly when I unplug it from the wall.  The only warning that I get pops up at the beginning of the boot and directs me to the CMOS.  It says something about not recognizing the AC adapter.  I am glad to see your post, because I was worried that it was either my battery or computer that was busted.   I am now going to try to get a new power cord / ac adapter.  Please let me know if you have any luck fixing your problem, and I'll do the same.   Chuy

All I have done is to replace the 90W brick with another.   I am still wondering if anything can be done to salvage the first adapter.

I am getting the same error message on start up indicating unable to detect power supply type  system may operate slower, etc.  and have to push F1 to continue.   After loading all systems seem to be working properly and runs on AC power orBatery power with out any dificulty.   Why the error?
