yes i have gone through my usual setting for font sizes, changed the theme, apperance over etc.. at an acceptable resolution to read the screen 1280x1024 the fonts are still ghosting ?? (im not sure of the word) to use. even at 1280x1024 the text still isnt readable 100%.

its odd becuase everything else works so well, launch media center and run the music videos fine, photographs are displayed on the monitor crystal clear and very rich in colour. even the icons on the desktop are perfect. its just the bl00dy fonts grrr.

I'll keep you updated and if you have a fix for yours please let me know. its currently unuseable at the moment due to this fault. Im going to have to call dell again - im out at football tonight, i'll call them after work tomorrrow.

I bought mine last week.

Cheers

I know the PERFECT fix for this.

Download a fix called R98539.exe from Dell.  It allows you to use the larger fonts -- I found out about it after a lengthy call to Dell OnCall last Friday.

It's amazing -- text is suddenly razor sharp.  And don't forget to switch to ClearType (Control Panel, Display Properties, Appearance, Effects, shoose ClearType not standard on smooth the edge setting.)

Set your resolution to 1920x1200, your dpi to around 165, and you'll be very happy, as am I.

The remaining problem I'm facing is pixelated images and smushed dialog boxes on the internet.

Does anyone have any solutions to this?

Shoot, so what happened?  Any effect at all?

I didn't realize you're a Brit -- from what site did you download the .exe?

It did the trick for me, but I'm still annoyed at the image display problems.

i just did a search for the exe on dell's website, it come back straight away with the file. I applied it without any problems and to be honest i didnt notice a difference.

I emailed dell technical services with some screenshots, i got an email overnight saying they are escalating to a technical supervisor and i should have a response on Monday.

i've been using the laptop over the last day or so running it at 1200x768 and im not having any problems, its when i go into display settings or another dialog box with small writing that i cant read what its saying and the text is distorted.

It's the dialog boxes that are still buggy for me.

I'd like to know what Dell tells you to do.

No, I have the same problem having also re-intalled Windows XP SP2. The different advices given in this forum help me to improve the display but does not fix the problem. The online support is not able to help me so far. They asked me to send screenshots but there is something crazy about it. When I create the bitmap file and zoom on the picture the fonts appear without any defaults! I am beginning to wonder if the WUXGA screen is fully compatible with windows XP.

I just purchased the Inspiron 9400/E1705 which is new.  I usually never purchase anything that just comes out because there are always bugs that need to be fixed.  The most irritating bug is the issue with not being able to view a clear website.  I am also faced with blurry and pixelated text on a website.  It is a very irritating problem.  I am hoping that someone will find the solution for everyone.  I have been reading the thread hoping that someone would post the fix.  I have tried all the fixes with the exception of playing with the registry keys.  That is not something I want to do and if the problem is that major, Dell should be on the hook to get us all a solution IMMEDIATELY.  This is so crazy.  We have all paid good money for our systems.  You'd think that someone at Dell would have noticed this problem.  My laptop has the widescreen 17 ultradisplay.  Everything else about the system is great.  I am truly hoping that a solution comes soon!  I will continue to check the site to see if a resolution is posted, although, Dell should contact each of us with a resolution.

Sideker, im so glad (not about your problem) but that you are experiencing the same as me with screenshots, i also sent 2 screenshots one at 1920 resolution the other at 1280x1024 when i zoomed on on my other PC the text was perfect.

i should hear back from dell today about this, ill make sure i update this post. I may even send the dell technician the URL of this thread so they can see its not just me.

I also done an install of XP sp2 over the weekend and the problem still persisted even with the windows video driver instead of the ATI , i was hoping that it was something to do with the dell image on my notebook that was causing the problem. Ive even looked at some 3rd party driver support on some overclocking forums, however i couldnt find a suitable one.

I can use the laptop if i scale down the display to 1024x768 dialog boxes are still a problem for me though, it simply isnt good enough, if id wanted a laptop that would display 1024x768 i could have got one of ebay for £400.

Cheers

I'm still monkeying around with this thing, no luck yet.  I think I'm going to have to send it back -- too bad, if it weren't for this problem, it'd be a terrific machine.

Here's a link to the US Dell site for that .exe.  I'm still suprised it didn't help you on your text problems.
