You probably knocked the clear plastic indexing ribbon loose either from the back of the ink cart carrier or from where it attaches to the side of the printer. If off, reattach.

I have just started gettiing the same problem - altho the ink cartridge holder is only slamming on one side (left side). I have checked for the clear plastic tape and it is intact on both sides. I hadn't done anything to the cartridge or internal workings immediately before this started happening - altho I have changed one of the ink cartridge within the last 4 days but it has been fine until now...

Can anyone help? Or is this just the beginning of the end for the printer?

Ps. The noise is annoying as well! Thanks

Another thing that will cause these and similar problems is if the clear plastic strip is dirty. Wipe clean being careful not to cause the strip to detach from the ink cart carrier or either side.

thanks W-t-s

i realise that i was printing two pages (N-up) to a page on that perhaps it was to do with the top margin being so close to the left side (and i hadn't tested printing one normal page) however...

i wiped the tape as you advised and...

printing one page normally it made no sound

printing N-up 2pp to a page it was much improved(only makes a muffled sound every few lines). i'll not push my luck too much with the tape (was fiddly and i don't think i wiped the whole length to the right) as i don't want to snap it but thanks very much, much improved!!

I have an all in one 924 and have the same problem. Found the plastic "indexing ribbon" and can't figure out where is goes. Left three emails for Dell Support - they should change their name - NO SUPPORT here. Any one have any clue where this piece of plastic should go a/o why this information isn't included in the manual since it appears to be a common problem?

The clear plastic indexing strip should be connected to each side of the printer. It also slips into a small slot on the back of the ink cart carrier. It is hard to get to and requires small agile hands and fingers. Also a small mirror to see the back of the ink cart carrier and a light helps. Many people have successfully reattached this strip. The ink cart carrier reads this strip so it knows where its at.

Thanks for your help William the Scot. I'll try it with a mirror and light.
