The only useable resolution for a notebook panel is its native one - anything lower will be fuzzy.

Right -- thanks.

So then one has to be happy with the default or it's no go. Why do they even bother with the lower resolutions then?

Lower resolutions are still very useful on CRT (tube) based monitors.  LCD's have physically fixed pixels and if you select anything other than native resolution then the hardware interpolates one pixel into multiple....

But, TV tube monitors use a scanning beam which can vary its "speed" and essentially give you a one pixel to one pixel mapping no matter what your resolution is.

Hello, widescreen displays are often at different aspect ratios than normal monitor screens.  That is to say that you must pick a resolution that keeps the aspect ratio or it will look degraded.  For the base screen for the 6400/E1505 the ratio is 16/10.  Usually, the most common ratios for widescreens are 16/9 or 16/10.  The upgraded LCD option (ultrasharp) will allow you to do a higher resolution at the required aspect ratio.  Hope this helps.
