LIKE SO MANY BEFORE ME I TOO HAVE AN INSPIRON 5100 WITH PROBLEMS. MY DIMM SLOT A IS NOT FUNCTIONING. CAN JUST THE SLOT BE REPLACED? THE COMPUTER WORKS FINE NOW BUT I HAVE ANOTHER 512 TO PUT IN IT? PLEASE HELP. THANKS
No, the slot cannot be replaced, requires the motherboard to be replaced.

We are assuming you tested both memory sticks in the slot. You can put 1 gb stick in the one good slot. There are some people on this forum who claim you can use 1 gb stick with bios a31.
I could use that 512 if you dont need it :).
