Here's a link to someone who put a 7800GTX, it's different from the regular 7800 but it might help you alittle to see how they play around with it:

If that's no help I suggest you also post your concern in these forums:

Best wishes.

As far as I know, you must order the Go 7800 with the E1705. The mother board of the E1705 is actually different when a Go 7800 is ordered. Thus, the card that you ordered later won't fit.

That's right, I forgot to mention.  If you got that laptop with integrated graphics, you cannot upgrade it without totally replacing the motherboard.  The board with integrated is different and incompatable with vid cards.

So if you got it with the X1400, then yes, you can upgrade it.

After posting this message, I discovered I had to order the new motherboard.

So I did and I've installed everything and it works great! Except my fan to the left of the board quit working :( It's part number MCF-J01BM05. Do I need to order another one for this board? I even tried it on the other side where the video card heatsink is and it still doesn't work.

AND which fan part number do I need for the other side so I can cool the heatsink for the video card?

Other than this fan it works great, but I don't want to use it until I get a new fan or figure out why this one isn't working.

Thanks!!!

My company pays for all of it because its my home developing machine.

The main problem with all of this is the fact that when I purchased the upgraded Vid card, dell didn't inform me that I needed to upgrade the motherboard. Then when I got the new motherboard, they failed to mention I would need new fans.

I talked to them on Monday and they said I needed to upgrade the fan for this new board as well, so I went ahead and ordered it as well as a fan for the video card heatsink.

So how much does it cost you to upgrade the motherboard, card?
Isn't cheaper to ebay out your existing laptop and buy a brand new one with the card?

Why did Dell stop including the 7800? Now they use this hypermemory card Ugggh. Anybody know if they might bring back the 7800?

Word has it that there was a shortage.  But it also may be possible that there were too many people were having problems with them, with heat, performance, and such.  But yes, the big question is whether they're going to offer a better card for that notebook, so far they've done nothing or given a clue, hopefully for you guys they won't wait too long and make you change your mind about getting a Dell.

I'm alittle dumbfounded about the situation or about what their plans are, because they've gone awhile with that laptop with that card being their highest option, the 6800 in the last generation was about double the performance.  I really think it's a waste because a 17inch laptop should have a good vid card, the size is a capability that compared with smaller laptops should be taken advantage of.

We'll see what happens though.  Maybe they're counting on that when they can offer a better card again, they can make money by over-charging it separately for those that missed out on it and want to upgrade, like they did with the 7800GTX and XPS gen2 owners.  Or, the M170's have been cheap lately (which is a hint that the new one is coming soon), so it's likely that they're forcing people that want a good vid card to buy those because they need to get rid of them, that sounds most reasonable of all when looking at this situation.  Best wishes.
