The obvious things if you have not tried them are:-
1. Use System Restore to revert to an earlier date.
2. Try Start / Run: "sfc /scannow" (without the "" marks, note space before /) to replace any corrupted Windows system files.
UPDATE: Also, see this post: http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&message.id=186394 re similar problems occurring after applying MS updates - could be the root of your problem?????
You can try this also..Open IE .Click on tools-internet options-advanced and remove the check mark from third party browser extension..Also delete cookies and files..
It seems like a lot of people have had the same problems after the last batch of Windows updates. I can't really comment on the issue as I don't use Auto Update and reading these made me decide to wait a little while before I do them myself.

Hi,
