Inspiron 4000 Video problems following Win 2K upgrade

Question

Hi all, I've been trying to upgrade an Inspiron 4000 from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 for a friend. Firstly I tried a straight upgrade, which failed part way through, then I wiped the HD and simply installed Windows 2000. This started OK, but ever since I tried to upgrade, the machine has only been using a small part of the screen. This holds even if I boot from the Windows 98 emergency floppy. I tried installing the latest ATI video driver from Dell, but it just threw up message saying something like 'the device did not start properly'. I have even flash upgraded the BIOS from revision A01 to A03, but that hasn't helped any. Right now I am baffled, has anyone any suggestions?

Brilliant! That's sorted that one out, thanks. One other thing, though, when I attempt to install the Rage Mobility Pro Driver from Dell into Windows 2000, I get a blank screen when I boot into Windows 2000. Without it the max. screen resolution is 640x480. Seems a bit odd...

Actually I can answer my second question - the laptop just didn't like the latest version of the driver(!)
I had been trying to use the file R54215.EXE, released on 01/14/2003, but it did accept the ATIW2KA6.EXE (released date 06/25/2001) version....
