Cookie -

I can confirm this as well. I noticed that after some drain on the 9-cell battery and plugging it in, I could hear a abnormally high pitched electronic 'whine' noise coming from the Memory access panel. It appears after the battery is charged, the noise stops. It is very loud when the lappie is powered off and charging.

Can anyone else confirm they see the same behavior when charging a batt?

It is really starting to bother me so I'm going to 'discuss' this with Support. I have had several Dell laptops and have never 'heard' this before. Perhaps it is a grounding issue.... Hmmmm.

Mugatu,

If you are having the above noise problem or one like it, you will need a system replacement.  If you have gotten your e1705 within the last 21 days this will be no problem.  If you have gotten it after the last 21 days it is still possible but you will have to do some complaining.

You should not having any noise coming from your e1705/9400 power port or battery... especially when charging it.  You can try the above steps I mentioned to troubleshoot.... but why troubleshoot a new system?  Like I said call Dell and describe your problem in detail.  They are more than likley going to want you to RULE things out.  Like... make sure its not this... make sure its not that.   For a problem like this it could be something small or something big, but normally they are going to start replacing parts - normally even the main board - the motherboard.

Call DELL and don't take no for an answer.  Demand a new system.  I would start with calling your sales rep, if he can't help you talk to his supervisor, if he can't help you call customer service and get a supervisor.  ALL TECH SUPPORT CAN DO IS TROUBLESHOOT AND REPLACE PARTS.  Call and get a different REP if you don't hear what you want to hear.  I have experience with 4 different e1705/9400 systems and NONE of them make this noise.

ourcookie,

Your screen showing jagged images and large pixels in images is not normal.  Check and tell me what resolution your e1705 is running at, what screen you got with your e1705 (the WXGA right?) and what resolution your 15.4 toshiba is running at.  Also exactly what images does it do this on.  Just wallpaper, just images taken with a digital camera, all pictures, only web pictures, only images in certain programs... etc. etc.

Also if you could take some pictures with your digital camera and post them somewhere on the internet... webshots, internet webspace, or somewhere else and provide the link for them here I might be able to pinpoint this problem better.  Like I said, the screen on the e1705/9400 is absolutley georgous, and is very very sharp.  All 4 systems I have seen have perfect colors, pixels, and absolutley no light leakage what so ever.  This e1705 has one of the most perfect laptop screens i've seen.  My TrueLife screen has the glossy coating and 1920 x 12000 native resolution, the other screen for the e1705/9400 (the WXGA) has 1440 x 900 resolution and this should be sharp as well.

The specs for the two e1705/9400 screen can be found here:

Thanks for the info. I'll call my sales rep and start with him. My ship date was 2/12 so I'm outside of the 21 days. Problem I see is the system I have has the 7800Go in it. There is no way I'll accept a replacement with an ATI card. ;)

Thanks again for the feedback and info!

FYI:
R11315.EXE off the Dell website is the other driver (I guess it is) that I loaded on my PC. The pixel problem went away.

Pixels blurry???? Yup same problem I had. Oh, and I was p*ssed as h*ll that I just dropped all that cash for something I did not think was worth it until now.

I to have the 17" great monitor with the Intel drivers.

I actually did 2 things. I checked the web site and downloaded that program, It's in the driver list, and I ran that Dell Support program (little ICON in the bottom right side of the window looks like an E). I selected "CHECK MY COMPUTER" It told me to change my ICONS since I had them set for LARGE (came from the factor like that).

So, so summarize, I downloaded the driver and rand the Dell Support program. Good luck, after you get this solved, it really is a SUPER PC.

ocman,

I did a search on the entire Dell website for R11315.EXE and I can't seem to find it. I also checked every Dell driver I have and can't locate it.

Can you tell me what the description of the driver/program is??

My apologizies, I did not pay enough attention to the specifics of the driver. I only wanted to solve my problem and move on. I trust this is helpful.

Ohhh... ok... that is the INITIAL release of the Intel 945GM Graphics Controller, Driver, Windows XP, Multi Language, Inspiron MP061, v.6.14.10.4431, A00 released on 01/18/06.... so if this is fixing the problems, then DELL must have messed up on the driver installation, it was corrupted, or they had something set wrong.

Cause this isnt an updated driver.

ecookie,

any luck?  Did the driver reinstall fix your problem.  If not, read my above post on 03-16-2006  02:48 AM

Hi I just got my E1705 today and can confirm the high pitch noise... I didn't notice it till I got home where it was quiet.  Even with the laptop off it still makes the noise when the ac adapter is plugged in.  Going to call support now.

After reviewing this KB, I kind of have to laugh. For me, this noise is evident when the lappie is powered OFF and the battery is charging. There is NO way that the CPU could be in C3 if the thing is turned OFF. Arggghhhhh! Support is driving me nuts - I didn't spend 2k to have these problems. There are multiple reports of this issue... leads me to believe there most likely is some kind of manufacturing problem here.

I was at the library the other day and the guy across the table from me asked me what was that weird noise my lappie was making... :smileymad:

Makes me wonder if this somehow could be connected to the MS USB bug and the power drain... Hmmmm...

Sorry that i didn't reply earlier.  Anyway,  I sold it before I even had the chance to download the file.  I was kinda discouraged first by the noise, then the pixel problem.

ourcookie,

Thats too bad. Sorry to hear you were disappointed and had bad luc with you e1705. I, my father, my girlfriend, and my uncle all have new e1705's thanks to my recommendation. All 4 of them are completley silent and have absolutley gorgeous vivid and razor sharp screens.

ALL,
just remember, if you have a problem like these or a hardware problem within the first 21 days ESPECIALLY of owning your laptop, call your sales rep or a customer support supervisor and DEMAND a BRAND NEW REPLACEMENT laptop. DO NOT take NO for an answer.

Be persistant as a pitbull and you will get what you want!

I love my e1705, and in my opinion it's the best Inspiron system DELL has made. I am a previous owner of an Inspiron 7500, 8000, 8500, 8600 and have worked with Inspiron 8200s, and 9200s.

This machine rocks! :-)
