Hi,
I have posted many places trying to find the part for the ac connector on my Inspiron 5150, no luck yet.  The problem is the connector (plug in the laptop) will not see the adapter at all. I have to move it around for awhile until it gets a connection. I have seen many post regarding this. Some have said there is a break in their laptop and soldering the piece in place has worked. My warrenty is out of course.
I would like to replace it instead of taking the time to fiddle with adapter, sometimes it's quick other times it takes forever. Battery is down to like 2o min. and no time this week to sit and try to get the connection to work.
Any suggestions would be great. Except sending it to Dell and spending 200 to 700 dollars. Everything else on the laptop works fine. Just the ac connection.
 Thanks,
Ali
P.S. It's a brand new adapter and a new battery. So that is not it. Worked for about 3 months, then stopped that is when I found out about moving it around to get the connection.
Thanks again.

I have a 5100 with the same problem. Battery powered the laptop is fine but the computer won't acknowledge the adapter and ac adapter won't charge the battery. It is annoying to say the least. From what I've read around here, the motherboard needs replaced. I tried the solder trick and it did not work. Sometimes if I hold the ac adapter cord 'just so' the battery will charge, but not always. I am down to just 3% charged and fading fast.

I just bought an external battery charger, which will enable me to charge the battery without the laptop. I will then use my laptop on battery power only and circumvent the whole ac adapter issue. Cross your fingers it works for me. It may be annoying but if it works, it is a cheap fix ($60). Otherwise, I am getting a new laptop because it hardly makes sense to fork over $400+ for a new motherboard (that may have the same problem down the road) when a new notebook sells for just a bit more.

read through that post. Its probably not your ac plug its a small chip on the underside of the motherboard.

I had this same exact problem with a clients 1150 about a week ago. Resoldered the small chip and it works fine now.

I can fix it for $180 plus s/h if you want to ship it to me. I work for an established company in kentucky. no risk of component theft (I couldn't believe people would actually do that when I read about it)

$180 beats $400-500 for a new motherboard.

Exactly the same problem as PNK517...

My Inspiron 1150 charger doesn't work either.  The battery is fine.  The power cord does not supply power to the laptop.

When plugged into the laptop the 3 lights flash rapidly and nothing will work.

Please help with ideas to fix the problem...

Hi Malamute, I am having exactly the same prob with my 5100. Battery and adapter are fine but it doesn't charge up. I wanted to buy external charger. Could you tell me where did you buy the charger.

Thanks

Hi vinsa- I bought my external charger for $65 at www. portatechs.com (remove the space). My laptop has been running strong on battery power ever since I bought the charger over five months ago. It was worth every penny.
