If you have the time, read the below links on wide monitors

Do you really use the monitor with its native resolution of 1920 x 1200 x 60Hz?

All facts you describe are typical artifacts caused by interpolation.

Theoretically the 24" should be sharper als the 19" monitors because their pixels are smaller.

I have the luck to work with NEC2180UX and 2170NX at work, also Eizo FlexScan and i cannot see a quality difference between the NEC and the Dell. It's much brighter than the Eizo or the 2180UX and driectly comparable to the 2170NX or the big 24" Samsung Monitor with PVA displays.

I use a PC with a ATI Fire GL 5100 with dual head setup at work and a NVIDIA 6600GT at home, always using DVI-D ports.

If you use a resolution of 1280x1024 e.g. ,you will see a blurry picture because the TFT has to interpolate. Especially for games i would never recommend a resolution of 1280 x 1024  if he game doesn't support 16:10 formats. It will be stretched too heavily and is really incompatible to wide screen formats. 1600 x 1200 or 1024 x 768 are acceptable because a stretching from 16:12 to 16:10 is not too heavy.
