XPS T450 Operating System & version is?

Have you tried to drag & drop the files in Windows explorer?

Correct; USB is backward compatible, just speed difference

USB Host Controller for USB 1.0 & 1.1 is same spec, at least one USB Host Controller must appear with the word Enhanced in it to reflect a USB 2.0 capable system

The OS is Windows 98 SE.  Thanks for confirming the backward compatibility for USB.

I tried to drag and drop but was not able to simultaneously have both the source file and destination drive (flash drive) open in the same pane.  How do I do that?

USB device is a USB Mass Storage class & W98 SE does NOT have the required USB drivers.

Assume you have installed required drivers that either came with product or obtained from product software download site (drivers for W98 SE ONLY)? You should do this BEFORE using the USB device. After software is installed you need to reboot. Inserting the USB device you should see windows messages – found new hardware now building or installing drivers. Presumably you are using a rear panel USB root hub ports (Self Powered)? W98 SE will automatically assign your USB Flash Drive a unique drive letter, you should then see this new drive in various places, for example Control Panel > System > Device Manager then expand Disk Drives (it should be there) something like USB Disk X.X. It will also show up in Windows Explorer view as a drive disk under My Computer.

Normal file/data transfer process is to select required file/data right-click COPY then select new drive (your USB Flash Drive) & right-click PASTE. If you then click on the new drive folders/files/data should be there. Since W98 SE doesn’t have safe removal feature you need to ensure file/data transfer is fully complete before removing USB device from USB port.

I managed to arrive at basically the solution you suggested.  I did download and install the necessary drivers.  My old system only has two rear panel USB ports which I was using for a printer and a scanner.  I just disconnected the scanner and plugged in the flash drive.  The drive does appear under my My Computer and Device Manager.

I selected the file, hit Edit, then Copy.  Then I clicked on the Removable Drive, hit Edit again, and Paste.  This particular file was only 526 KB so it transferred pretty quickly.  I still don't know if I have USB1.0 or USB1.1.  I have many more files to transfer now that I know this works, so I'll try your select/right click suggestion.  Thanks for the help.

Thank goodness.

As previously stated USB Host Controller for USB 1.0 & 1.1 is the same spec so you cannot determine from here. But it’s a pretty good bet that your XPS T450 has USB 1.1 Take it you already know product-downloaded drivers are for W98SE ONLY & must NOT be installed in WXP SP2.

If it’s a 512MB flash drive you can transfer a massive amount of (if not all) personal document type data in one go. You need to be very careful if you are transferring application type files rather than personal data files. The former may result in software compatibility problems & cause conflicts on your new E510, otherwise good luck.
