Since an external display works fine you've pretty much isolated the problem to the LCD display. Best guess is that the backlight has gone bad or the inverter.

 

If it's not under warranty Dell will charge a LOT to fix this.  Better to shop around for an independent LCD repair shop.  Some recommend this one: http://lcdrepair.net/.   Very reasonable prices.
