Inspiron 700M FREEZES AS SOON AS STARTED

Question

dont know if this is the right place to post this but here it goes...   My inspiron 700m laptop is having some issues.  I cant seem to fix it.  The computer boots up as normal....goes thru the Windows XP screen, says welcome, takes me to my desktop...once at my desktop i cant click on anything.  Its like its frozen.  I try to click on start and nothing happens....yesterday i realized that if you click on something within the first second or two that its starting the application or whatever im clicking on will open but then freezes again.   A family member was using my computer and has finally told me that they had downloaded something called 'total recorder' and then the serial crack for it.  when they opened up the crack it started to load and then my yahoo antivirus popped up saying that i dont know how many number of files were infected by variations of java.byte or something like that...i'm assuming this is whats causing my problems.   Is there anyway (program software anything) that i can at least try to retrieve some files or any way to fix this!!! help!!   thanks so much in advance

First, rule out the hardware: power on, F12, Dell Diagnostics, extended tests. If nothing shows up, boot in Safe Mode, update your antivirus definitions, and scan.

already did the tests nothing showed up i have run in safe mode, but once it loads i cant update anti virus because i can't click on anything....so i cant get anything to run thanks

You can either mount the drive in an external case and attach it to a working system with updated antivirus, or bite the bullet and do a Symantec restore (ctrl-f11 at boot).

Back up your data before doing the restore, as you will lose everything.
