I have installed most of the updates, the ATI, BIOS, Synaptics (they said BSOD on this one), Bluetooth and dell quickset - and so far two days with no blue screen.

The second 9400 machine I have is identical except no ATI and it spends all of its life working on battery, have not experienced any bluescreens on this machine (and it is running all the old drivers).

(Both ordered 21th March)

Well my e1705 was running well for a few days but I got 2 BSODs back to back this morning. Back to the drawing board. Does Dell tech support ever peruse these forums?

I have the E1505 which is all of 3 weeks old and am getting the same BSOD.

I called Dell support and they said it was a software problem and wanted to charge me $239 per year to fix the problem.

Any ideas to help?

"I called Dell support and they said it was a software problem and wanted to charge me $239 per year to fix the problem."
I did the same. Refused to pay MORE to fix a brand new laptop with no exotic software on it. Finally, when I called to return it, they offered me a credit toward a support session with the software dept. to see if the issue could be resolved. They were the geniuses who told me it was the Palm drivers that were causing the problem.

My laptop has since been returned. I couldn't be bothered anymore, but the curious masochist in me is still wondering what the heck is wrong with these systems.

Good luck!

Hi,

Well I feel sligthly better knowing that I'm not alone with this problem :(

I ran periodically into BSOD, upgrading the drivers didn't do much... I do have the ATI Radeon 1400 card. I disabled Dell Quickset a long time ago but no change... Dumpchk seems to be pointing its finger toward kmixer.sys (looks like this would be more related to the sound card).

Any clue/update would be appreciated!

I also have a new E1705 Inspiron -- I get the BSOD at random times . .  I can't figure this out as well . . i have spent more time on the with support and trying to figure this problem out rather than doing my work.  I got this computer to make my life a little easier instead it has created a huge amount of stress and frustration.  I find myself crying aobut this.  Its really disappointing to spend so much money and to be exeperiencing such serious problems.  I'm devestated and extremely frustrated!

We all feel your pain - I think my BSODs have gone away, or at least happen pretty infrequently now. Try:

installing omegadrivers
remove Dell Quickset
update all of your drivers
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
Flash Bios

detach the kensington doc (if you have one)

I also tried allocating less memory to Stystem Restore, dropped my virtual memory to 1536 MB and ran ad-aware.

No BSOD in 2 days, so we'll see if it stays this way or not.

That's just silly that you had to do that. That's not a dig on you runSun11, it's just ridiculous that Dell customers are forced to go through such an ordeal to get their product to work properly. Don't use your Doc? What if that's part of the reason you purchased the laptop in the first place? Flash the BIOS? What if you're a relative newbie, or not terribly tech savvy? A botched BIOS update can really give you problems. System Restore memory allocation...adaware? Jeesh. Remove the Quickset? Wait a sec... didn't that come preloaded?

Dell, do you guys even bother to read these forums? Hello??? This is a pretty legit beef that people are having with these systems.

Step up.

I agree with you, this is ridiculous. Unfortunately I haven't been able to pin down why I've been getting the BSODs so I keep trying different solutions. I should have done a clean install when I got the machine, stripped out all the bloatware that Dell loaded onto the machine. If I get another BSOD this week then I'm going to, and if that still doesn't work I'm going to return the machine to Dell.

My gut feeling is that the ATI card is causing the trouble, I've had trouble with both Mac and PCs crashing because of ATI card issues. The good news is that if it is an ATI problem then it will be solved, eventually. Anyone had this problem with the 7800 Go?

I haven't had one for two weeks either but only because I unplugged my kensington doc.  The software updates from Dell's web site didn't help in my situation.

I really don't understand . . . if we paid for brand new computers that are fully functional we should have gotten that for the money we paid.  I'm seriously thinking about what to do about this problem . . it's ridiculous . . i'm spending so much time trying to fiix this probelm and to "tinker" it so that it doesn't get the BSOD.  I'm afraid to put new programs and connect my camera and other hardware so that I don't get a BSOD -- with a new computer this should not be a worry.  Everything should be working properly.  If you had bought a brand new car and you drove off the lot and it stalled down the street -- wouldn't you take it back?  This is exactly what's happening to our computers . . they are stalling every time you get a BSOD -- so why should we trying to fix this problem?  Would you pop the hood of your car and try to fix the car so it doesn't stall anymore?  I don't think so . .  These laptops should be recalled . . or we should get our money back.

I've been having the same problem.  My system has the 7800 go card, and it started BSOD'ing from day one, so the video card is probably not the problem.  It's happened about 12 times since I received the system on 5/3/06.

Problem occurs at random it seems--while playing a game, on the internet, closing an application, or just idling.  Updated every driver I could and no luck.  Restored the software to factory a number of times, and also at a number of various points of the software installation to no avail.  Also did the BIOS update but 2 days later it crashed again.

Check this out--I bought the system with McAfee "pre-installed" and it wasn't loaded properly!  I had to work with McAfee to get it cleaned off my registry and reinstalled before that would work properly too.

I did a lot of research on this and found many "fixes".  This is what makes the most sense:  the USB ports are getting "overloaded" when the Kensington dock is attached--considering you can attach 3 USB peripherals to it.  Whatever the problem is, this is my fourth Dell system and the first time I've had any problems with a NEW system right off the bat.  If they're going to sell a dock, it should be compatible even if there is something plugged into every single port!

Considering how many people are having this problem and the amount of time I have wasted just trying to get this thing to function properly, I am now seriously considering a return.  Apparently there's been a lot of work put into solving this problem but no solution found.

Good luck and my condolences to you all.
