The lack of mixer seems to just be the way the 9250 driver was written. Seems to me there are 3 possibilities:

1. The driver was poorly wtitten.

2. the chip and driver might have capabilities and options that are disabled in the Registry. The only one of these we here have discovered is how to turn on mic monitoring, the instructions you mentioned.

3. or maybe the chip is just limited and the driver is written correctly.

Older version of 'soundcard': the 9750 chip/driver has stereo mix, cd, mic, and line-in in the recording panel. However you can't change these integrated audio systems on the motherboard.

I can't say for sure what you need to play into chat rooms because I'm not familiar with that concept. But if it's something you have been able to do in the past with a computer soundcard then an external Soundblaster will almost certainly be able to do it. These 'cards' are just external versions of regular soundcards with full capability, not like the integrated audio in the Inspirons.

Hollep,

Yes, you can play mp3 file in chat room, but you can't hear while playing; chatters in room can. Simply, just use audio cable to wire from headphone jack to mic jack. And you should check mark on Line-in in Recording panel. You can't play karaoke because either line-in or mic is used. Hope it helps.

Can you advise me on what kind of external soundcard to get? Soundblaster has LIVE for around $50 and Audiology 4 for $250. With that kind of difference I thought I should ask which do you think would allow me to play music in chat rooms?

Thanks for all the help guys!

I also would appreciate advice as to which external sound card would help. I'm so disappointed at only having Line In and Microphone - no use to me at all (I have the Dimension 3100, recently purchased - all my previous Dells have worked fine with audio but this one has the integrated sound card which seems to be useless for my needs). I'm not even sure if an external sound card will help. I want to record from the internet etc and need other sound sources rather than just Line In and Microphone.

Hello again Jim,

I'm over the moon :smileyvery-happy: The driver has fixed it just as you promised. This is such great news and means I can use my favourate software again (Polderbits). I'd written to them about the problem and they advised me to install a different sound card so now I will let them know about this result - just shows how easy it is once you know how!

My very sincere thanks to you again xxx:smileyhappy:

rainbow106,

You can get the capabilities you want with any Soundblaster external soundcard.

This is an old thread and since the last post before yours the forum members have developed some new information about getting more out of the integrated sound in their Inspiron laptops. I'll paste in the info because some of this ought to help you with your desktop which has the same Sigmatel 92xx chip as the laptops.

A.)There is an LG driver for the Sigmatel 92xx that has stereo mix. To get it follow this path:

LG Service Site

1. Click on 'Product Support'
2. Click on 'Device Driver'
3. Select 'Notebook' from the dropdown list under 'Product'
4. Select 'Windows XP' under 'Operating System'
5. Type 'Sigmatel' into the subject box.
6. Click 'search.'

The driver to choose is labelled Ver 5.10.04866 XNOTE(LE50)

(This driver is known to work on at least some of the Inspirons with the 92xx chip. This driver was discovered by dhkang002.)

B.) Another way is to make modifications to the .inf files in Dell's Sigmatel 92xx driver. This solution is discussed in a thread at notebookforums.com, but the thread itself is quite long and confusing. One of our forum members,New Hope editor, has written a set of instructions and a link for implementing the .inf file replacement. Following these instructions will result in a driver that has the stereo mix function plus many other improvements, but it is a more difficult solution than just installing the LG driver.

New Hope editor's inf file replacement instructions

New Hope editor's instructions are in Reply #23 in that thread.

C.) There is some software called Total Recorder. (This tip was supplied by Kalleralle.)

Total Recorder

This installs an additional audio driver that captures audio and allows for recording sources such as streaming audio that isn't possible with the Dell's Sigmatel driver. It doesn't record everything that 'stereo mix' does, though. You can download a demo of it and if it works for you it costs $11.95 to buy.

Best wishes to you

Ps... I've downloaded the Sound Recorder trial version and it certainly does record for me! It must be my lucky day :smileyvery-happy: (and all thanks to you - thank you again)

Well that's great that it worked for you. I didn't even know that the Dimensions had this same problem and solution.
