Model: 5150

I am not sure that I can help, but I have the same problem with my 5150. It seemed to be working ok until a week or so ago. I don’t use it that much to be honest, which is what surprised me.

I powered the machine up and without me noticing, it shut it self down. Since I have had the trouble you have. I have tried to power up, but this will not happen. It seem like it wants to, but then with out a delay it shuts down. Caps lock light flashes too.

Although I did find the power management was a bit temperamental on most recent occasions I used it, where it would not recognise the power adapter being plugged in. This was way before the problem started.

I have tried going through the Dell trouble shoot and doing all Dell support suggested, remove battery, memory, HD, etc. This didn't help. I did ask if this may be a common issue with this system, they where adamant it is not, I disagree.

I guess it maybe the motherboard, which I don’t know much about. Since its not only me with the same issue, I can only guess we have one of the Dell’s dodgy batch. My machine is out of warranty and would like to find out what can be done or if it can be fixed.

If anyone can help, would be much appreciated.

the fault that the laptop wont boot is coursed by al little chip on the moterbord. its the lvc14a on the bottom side on the mainboard. it can be repaired. the chip needs to be resolderd.
if you cant repair it on your own i would perhaps buy the laptop. Think of it and let me know how much. inclusive the schipping to germany. my email adress is toeppe@t-online.de

It was the memory. I tried various combinations (I had a 128 stick and a 256 stick) and it ended up that only the 128 stick worked... sO I'm trying the 256 stick in another machine today to see if its just gone bad, but I'm assuming thats what it is. In another system, however, merely taking out the memory and putting it back in worked, so who knows.

I just had the same problem 20 minutes ago (the same week i buy a new iMac too!). The fix for me was to remove one 256 MB RAM chip from slot A, with my 512 chip remaining in slot B. I'll try to reboot it with the 256 in there later, but at least my Dell is up and running again.

Cheers,
Bryan
