You probably need to add whatever "watermark" you want to the picture with a separate graphic/picture program first.  Then when you insert the picture it will have whatever you want permanently in it.

Thanks fireberd for your prompt reply. It set me off on a different track.

I can now overwrite each picture with text having a transparent background. However, I'm still looking for a solution which overlays the original picture (in my case a newspaper cartoon) with a standard, pre-prepared, image such as : 'DO NOT COPY'. I might have to do this for several hundred such cartoons, so you can understand the need for a simple procedure. I'm using MS Paint V5.1 by the way.

You could use Word, insert your picture, then use WordArt to create the Do Not Copy text. If you select the Do Not Copy text you can copy and paste it into other pictures in Word. See below for an example:

If you create the words "Do Not Copy" and save them as a picture, then open the actual picture, insert the Do Not Copy picture on it, then save it as a final picture, it would not be removable (I think).  Yes, you'd have to do this a few hundred times, but I know of no quicker way.

Thanks Allan,

The best yet, but it still doesn't have the neatness of the watermark process.
Perhaps I'm expecting too much from Word and Paint.

dms997,

You can get a freeware version of uMarkLite at this link, it will apply text or image watermarks in batches of 50 at a time. Only problem with the freeware version is, it puts a small watermark of it's own at the bottom left of the image

Thanks for the pointer to uMark. I found the lite package too limited, the professional package was more credible. You can get it for a two week free trial.

Thanks everyone for your help.
