1) Start - Run - cmd - ipconfig /renew and hit Enter. You will get an error message. If the message has the word socket added to it, it is Winsock Error. To fix this, go into STart -- run -- netsh reset winsock catalog.
2) If you get, Unable to contact DHCP Server as the error, it might be because of
a) Wrong Network Key if your network is secure
b) MAC Address Filtering on your router
c) Try a wired connection and see if it connects fine. This is to isolate if it is a software issue.
Tried a wired connection last night - still couldn't connect, . then someone on another forum suggested inserting a paperclip into the reset hole on the (belkin) router. This restored the factory defaults & the router had to be set up again !
Spent all evening configuring, & (thankfully),I'm back to where I started...
IF in the course of using the computer at another house it somehow acquired a hard-coded TCP/IP address then you need to take that out by switching back to "Use DHCP to acquire TCP/IP address automatically"
Also, make sure that there is no entry for Gateway, unless it is the actual address of YOUR router.
Finally, in my opinion DNS should work also on "automatic" rather than having to have DNS coded addresses; however, if there is a DNS address (or two) then make sure they are yours and not ones for some other setting, such at the other house. Without DNS working you will not be able to reach a website where you are not typing the actual TCP/IP address for it.
