Bought an Truemobile1350 MiniPCI for my i8200 from eBay for less than £10. Downloaded newest drivers and edited the platform recognition in the setup.ini (as recommended by the techies on the forum) and it works very well. Wouldn't really recommend the 14 series unless you think you have a need for 802.11a.
If you use any Truemobile cards on the i8200 which are not recommended on the Dell website (later cards) you will need to edit the drivers and they will work fine.

Yes. The Intel cards have multiple problems. The transmit power settings don't set (the card will be set to 100% but will only be transmitting at about 40%. Changing the transmit power then setting it back to 100% fixes the problem until you reboot, log off, etc., then you have to do it again). Also, the transmit rate varies wildly. When it drops to 1mbps, you loose the connection.
I bought an Intel card. Still have it. Don't know any use for it though.
The card was not designed for the i8200 as it is a later card. During the setup the drivers look for the platform which means the model, so you need to get rid of this in the setup.ini file.
I presume that you have the latest drivers so go to the Dell drivers and find the driver.
Right click 'Start' then 'Explore All Users'. Open 'Dell' then 'drivers' and scroll down to yours which should be R115321, or R115320 if you are in the UK.
Open the driver file and go down to a file marked 'Setup...Configuration Settings.....1kb'. Open the file and now you will need to delete a line.
Scroll down to the bottom of the notepad and edit as follows:
Close the file as edited and double click on the Setup icon nearby (aerial transmitter). The setup procedure will begin and it will recognise your card.
Come back and ask if you get stuck but let me know if all is ok.
Cheers

I have yet to have any problems with my selected card. I checked into all the cards listed in this thread and found a great deal on the Intel 2200 BG and went for it. It took a bit to get the drivers installes but thanks to all the info here that went smoothly. Not to say this will happen for everyone.
How do I know if I am wireless ready? I just read something stating that even though the compartment is available the laptop may not have a wireless antenna built in.
---best way to find out if i have a wireless antenna?
Unlike the newer models the i8200 came with an antenna, even if a card was not originally ordered. It is easy to check; just open the compartment and look. If it has never been used with an internal WLAN Mini PCI you will see a wire and the connector taped to the cover so open it carefully or you might damage the antenna.
If you have not got one you will need to fit an antenna before you can get the benefit of the wireless card. The details for fitting the card are here on the Dell website.

Recommend you stay away from the Intel cards.
I'm using an atheros card in my Inspiron 8200. Very pleased with it:

what do you mean by "editing the drivers"? I just bought the Truemobile 1470 and I can't get it to be recognised by my i8200.
thanks,
Rich

I am interested in using an internal wireless card, replacing my external apendage card.
What is recommended to use with my 8200?
What about the Intel WIFI Wireless Pro 2200 B/G?
