Hi,
well...obviously the latest 855GM driver from the Dell home does not support 1680x1050,  Intel's latest 855GM driver, I tried on my 700m and I could not install. It says it ca not be installed on my machine. I did not try removing dell driver before install Intel driver. Did someone try?
Looks like there is no solution unless Dell release a new ver. driver that supports 1680x1050.
Did someone already talked with Dell for this? I am not sure if Dell is working on this issue.

We are working it in the labs. We also cannot get 1680X1050 on the 2007WFP with the Inspiron 700M. I am looking for a 2005FPW to check this on.

If Dell is working to support 1680x1050 on 700m and going to release a new ver. driver. I hope it also include 1680x1200 if technically possible. I see monitors on the market coming with 1680x1200 resolution.

Thanks,

Hey all,

I may have a solution. I received an updated A02 version of the monitor (the first one was an A00 and didn't work), so that is the first necessity. from there, i made sure the updated display profile and graphics card drivers were installed. after that, turn on your laptop without the monitor attached. then attach the monitor. if you then go into display properties, you should be able to access 1680x1050.

Unfortunately, when you re-start your computer, the computer will-reset back to the 1280-ish resolution.

It's very finicky, but that seems to be what's working for me so far. From what i understand, dell is working on the problem.

please let me know if this works for anyone else.

Hi,

I'm in the same situation of imscotty -- another workaround to the problem is the following:

1. after your 700m boots up you'll be in 1400 x 1050
2. right click on "my computer" and then "manage"
3. go in the device manager
4. open up the "monitors" subtree, you'll see 4 or 5 monitors listed in there
5. right click on the "monitors" tree node and select "scan for hardware changes"
6. repeat 5. until you get the firs 3 monitors listed as "Dell 2007WFP (Analog)" (usually it takes 3 or 4 attempts)
7. go in your graphics properties, and you'll now have the 1680 x 1050 resolution available

I believe this might be a video driver problem / limitation.

I'm having the same issue here as well. Just purchased a 2007WFP for a client after having a great experience with the 2005WFP I purchased for myself. Now I'm trying to setup up a 700m with the monitor and it is not working. I can't get the correct resolution of 1680x1050, and I am having a lot trouble getting the monitor to be recognized at startup, ie I don't see the boot menus and windows loading screen on the 2007wfp, the image on the external monitor doesn't come up until after the machine has logged into Windows. I really hope Dell posts a solution soon, otherwise I'm gonna have to return this monitor.

Updates? Anyone?

I'm in the same predicament as all of you, and I have tried everything, including something I hadn't seen mentioned here yet: Registry Hacks.

Don't even bother. It froze my system shortly after boot, so if anyone with upper knowledge in the field of the all-powerful Windows Registry wants to mess with it, make sure to establish a Restore Point before doing so.

And PowerStrip, my once-believed last resort, can't force custom resolutions on an Intel chip. So much for that.

Upon reading this thread I was thrilled to see a Dell mod saying that they were working up a solution, and eagerly await the release of the magical driver that will solve all our problems.

To those in "the lab," I cheer you on. Godspeed.

Hi everyone,

I also own a 700m but I have actually purchased another monitor. The viewsonic vx2025 which is another 1680x1050 widescreen. I am having similar problems as with everyone here as well.

However, I did once, get the native resolution to work by uninstalling all the monitors in the device manager, uninstall the intel graphics extreme 2 drivers. and reinstalling everything again using hte latest drivers form intel. after rebooting, I connected my monitor and used fn+f8 twice to get only the external monitor. i then went into the display properties to change it to 1680x1050. However, If i were to change any additional settings later (i.e. switch between notebook lcd/external lcd, or play with extended desktops) there would be a high chance that this option is gone again. For now, start windows under the native res IF i do not make any additional changes. This DOES limit the portability of my laptop as when i disconnect and reconnect, I may lose the resolution making my laptop NOT PORTABLE!

One interesting thing i did notice was that in device manager, under monitors, there are an awful low of monitor drivers, one of which is default, and another is plug and play. I assume one is my lcd, and the other is the external, but would these sets of drivers be the culprit of the irratic 1680x1050 selection? I tired updating the monitor INF from viewsonic, but it doesnt help since there are so many drivers!

It would be great if Dell can provide a solution for external widescreen users! This laptop is far from out of date and Dell should continue to provide support for this laptop!

Hey folks, I received my 2007WFP monitor today but I had no luck with it. Do we have any news? What about the Dell lab efforts? Do these really take place?

at this point I don't think anything is going to happen... either you're lucky and with the suggestions from the users above you can get 1680x1050 at least temporarily, or I feel you'll have to go for another monitor, or another laptop.

When does this become an issue for lawyers? I too saw the 700m on the compatibility list when I purchased my monitor. Now I can't get the external monitor to work in it's native resolution with my "compatible" laptop and DELL acknowledges that this problem exists. Is this false advertising?

I am very surprised that Dell has not issued a fix for this. It is clearly still an issue and it appears that Dell is trying to sweep this one under the rug. Only problem is us customers that are faced with the issue are, in essence, the rug - and Dell is sweeping the dirt right in our faces by not doing anything. Being as desperate (and stubborn) as I am I've managed to clear said dust, but in exchange have sacrificed this metaphorical rug for a permanent carpet. Still with me?

I think my post is still stickied at the top of this board, and in no way am I surprised I haven't received an outpouring of customers showing interest. It makes perfect sense, as the pseudosolution is one that will in time force you to convert your 700m into a desktop replacement, or spend about half an hour "converting" your PC back into a laptop whenever you want to go portable. And who knows why anyone would want to do that, I mean, it's not like the 700m is an ultraportable, or anything like that... (/sarcasm)

Come on, Dell, it's as easy as turning on the vacuum cleaner and ridding all that dust out from under us once and for all. And by vacuum cleaner I mean a BIOS update; by easy I mean a revision to the VBIOS resolution tables. I know it can be done, it's in the official Intel documentation for our graphics chipset. I'd do it myself, but only the big time OEM guys like yourselves get access to all the neat little toys required to compile a complete BIOS. I've grown quite tired of my pseudosolution. In fact, I've corrupted my hard drive's file system about four times, all because these wonderful, inappropriate drivers I'm using seem to enjoy shutting down my computer, regardless of hard disk activity. Oh, what fun!
