You're very welcome. That looks better, but we are finished yet.
Reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Configure to show all files/folders:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders
Please launch HijackThis and place a check next to these:

Delete this file it it still exists:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dana\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YTTENYTK\

Reboot normally.
Do you know what Bitexmax is, and did you install it?
If not, please have this file scanned here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ You may have to click on Projects (only if the homepage comes up) and then online Malware Scan to access the virusscan page.
If you are at a black page with the title "Online malware scan", you are in the right place.
Click "Browse..." and navigate to the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\subitset.dll Click "Open" and then "Submit"
It will take a couple seconds and then the results should be lower on the page.
Please copy the information from "File:" down to "Norman Virus Control" and post it in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log. Thanks. :)
Finally, go back and rehide files:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Check: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
We'll decide what to do with that one file after I review the jotti report.
I don't know what bitexmax is at all. I didn't install it. Here's what I got while in safe mode from the jotti site:
File:subitset.dllStatus:
POSSIBLY INFECTED/MALWARE (Note: this file was only flagged as malware by heuristic detection(s). This might be a false positive. Therefore, results of this scan will not be stored in the database)
Hi Bugbatter! So far so good. When I rebooted I had no sign of the Sysprotect! Yahoo. The response I got from the the Jotti site was short:
was that it was either part of a firewall or malware. I will have to add a second reply to capture the exact wording. I do have a question. Can I now go back and reset the system restore so that I have a "clean" restore file? Is it a matter of turning it off and rebooting? More info to come. This is so cool. You all seem to be the only ones who know how to deal witht this sysprotect thing! At least you are doing it in a way that someone like me can follow!
We'll flush your System Restore at the very end after everything is clean.
Let's reconfigure to show all files again.
Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\
subitset.dll RIGHT-CLICK on it and select Properties.
If it doesn't say Microsoft or something you recognize, we'll get rid of it.
(I'm pretty sure it is bad, because I cannot find any info on it.)
Reboot into Safemode again.
If you do not know what
Bitexmax is launch HJT and place a checkmark by this:
O21 - SSODL: Bitexmax - {40A1780A-9E96-4AE5-9D94-52C2B5B9ADB1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\subitset.dll Close all windows and click "Fix Checked".
Browse to the file and delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\
subitset.dll
Then go back and rehide files.
Reboot.
Run
Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.
Your outdated Java most likely made you susceptible to Vundo.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components:
1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web
browser
2. Click Start > Control Panel
* Depending on your OS or configuration, you may have to click Start
>Settings > Control Panel
3. Open Add or Remove Programs
* If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, open Add/Remove
Programs
4. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name
* Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read
each entry in the list
5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
6. Follow steps 4 and 5 as many times as necessary to remove all
versions of Java. ** If at any time during the uninstallations, you are asked to reboot, do so. Then return to Add/Remove and continue removing any other versions of Java until all components of Java have been removed.
7. Delete the Java folder in Program Files.
8. Proceed with reinstalling Java. You will need to use Internet Explorer for this.
Go to
Sun Java and click the link to download the
Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do
not run it.
When the download is complete, close the browser and install it.
Reboot.
Please post a fresh HJT log. Let me know how things are running.
If everything is fine we'll flush System Restore, but I want to see the final log first.
Here's the exact wording from Jotti's virus scan: The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file...do I go back and try this one in safe mode too? dlg
I have a quick question. The properties for the subiset.dll showed that it was created in August 2005. We purchased our new computer in March? 2006. There was nothing else that indicated it was associated with micorsoft or anything recognizable. It indicated that it was unknown. Could it be some type of back door for some of the other programs that came installed on the computer?
My inclination is to get rid of it. It does seem suspicious.
If you are hesitant, clean out your Recycle Bin manually before you do DiskCleanup and do not check Recycle Bin for cleaning when you run DiskCleanup. Then delete the file. Leave it in your Recycle Bin for a few days until you know if all your programs are operating normally.
Note jotti's scan of that file: VBA32
Found Backdoor.xBot.26 (probable variant)

Open Killbox.
A box will open with a list of all user profiles.
Check the following boxes at a minimum for each profile by clicking on the drop down and checking the boxes that are enabled. Some will not apply and those boxes will not be available to check. Make sure you do this for all the profiles listed.
Temporary Internet Files
Temp Files
XP Prefetch
If you want to clean your cookies, history, and list of recent files run you may check those boxes as well.
Then,,
Check on the Button titled "Delete Selected Temp Files"
Exit by clicking the Button titled "Exit(Save Settings)"
Once back into the main killbox program.

Then in killbox click File>>Paste from Clipboard
At this point the "Single File" button should be enabled so you can click it.
Click the "All Files" button.
Then click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes
A second message will ask to Reboot now? You will need to click Yes to allow the reboot.
It wouldn't hurt to run VundoFix again just to be sure that temp has not reinstalled anything.
Please post a fresh HJT log and let me know how things are running.
Sorry to be dense but...when I opened the killbox the window shows
An open pull down box that is asking for full pat of file to delete. There is a symbol of an open file to the right, a page and the Killbox symbol. Below are radio buttons; the one selected shows 'standard file Kill'. Below is delete on reboot, replace on reboot. end explorer shell while killing file. and then a drop down box with [System Procss] and a caution sign next to it. I don't see the bos with the list of user profiles. Is this the right place to be? Thank you.

Reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Configure to show all files/folders:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders
Please launch HijackThis and place a check next to these:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://as.starware.com/dp/search?x=wKX1ILEOi+Vh7AfA98Gm4Me69ZMbubcDFaDWeHPPJB7wbSJWEiDmtQmcjnLL/alkkye4SwsJbIjQ02Bsfn9jpGj+xktnc2vwW1otZX/TJnXQu3ROkev4hIdOL8eLMC28mIpVRHkbo+ZG/HXjz0ue1tJWU9mJAwUacu9H4AA3WIXKRXwER3LzIoDMvQIubBEK

Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".
Delete this file it it still exists:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dana\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YTTENYTK\ SysProtectScannerInstall[1].exe
Reboot normally.
Do you know what Bitexmax is, and did you install it?
If not, please have this file scanned here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
You may have to click on Projects (only if the homepage comes up) and then online Malware Scan to access the virusscan page.
If you are at a black page with the title "Online malware scan", you are in the right place.
Click "Browse..." and navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\system32\subitset.dll
Click "Open" and then "Submit"
It will take a couple seconds and then the results should be lower on the page.
Please copy the information from "File:" down to "Norman Virus Control" and post it in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log. Thanks. :)
Finally, go back and rehide files:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Check: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
We'll decide what to do with that one file after I review the jotti report.

Let's reconfigure to show all files again.
Browse to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ subitset.dll RIGHT-CLICK on it and select Properties.
If it doesn't say Microsoft or something you recognize, we'll get rid of it.
(I'm pretty sure it is bad, because I cannot find any info on it.)
Reboot into Safemode again.
If you do not know what Bitexmax is launch HJT and place a checkmark by this:
O21 - SSODL: Bitexmax - {40A1780A-9E96-4AE5-9D94-52C2B5B9ADB1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\subitset.dll
Close all windows and click "Fix Checked".
Browse to the file and delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ subitset.dll
Then go back and rehide files.
Reboot.
Run Disk Cleanup in each user's profile:
Go to Sun Java and click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it.
When the download is complete, close the browser and install it.
Reboot.
Please post a fresh HJT log. Let me know how things are running.
If everything is fine we'll flush System Restore, but I want to see the final log first.

http://downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
to your desktop.
Reboot into Safemode so that you are offline and Ewido's Guard is not running.
Launch HijackThis and place a check next to this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.USYP_0001_N76M1005] "C:\Documents and Settings\Dana\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YTTENYTK\SysProtectScannerInstall[1].exe" -nag
Close all windows and click "Fix Checked"
Check the following boxes:
Delete on Reboot
Highlight the complete path of this entry below and copy it.
C:\Documents and Settings\Dana\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YTTENYTK\SysProtectScannerInstall[1].exe" -nag

Thank you.
