Have you also tried booting into safe mode with networking? Shut off computer, tap F-8 upon startup til windows advanced startup screen/choose safe mode with net/enter twice/log in under your account. If you can get inside windows get online and d/l hijackthis from the following link:
http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html 5 headings down/2 icons below. Save the Hijackthis program to desktop. Extract files to desktop (so it will not be in a temp folder). Run the program and post a logfile in the appropriate forum. Then we might be able to check things from there.
It sounds like you are infected with the Titan Shield parasite. Its complete removal instructions can be found on 2-Spyware.com and BleepingComputer.com websites. Search both sites for the information. Unfortunately, I cannot provide any links, as my post will be deleted (see the message
Cease all infighting).
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\\HJT\\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents AT THE LINK BELOW
Thanks all for your advice. Got with dell reps last night and bought software insurance so they could help get rid of the virus. All that happen was they made me restore my computer to factor default which wiped out everything.:smileysad: But all in all I guess it's ok now I have a fresh new start. And better virus and spyware protection.
you wrote that you bought "software insurance" from DELL... can you elaborate on this: Is it literally an "insurance" policy, that allows you to contact DELL over a pre-defined time period [e.g., one month, 90 days, a year] at no additional cost, to get assistance with all manner of software problems? Or was it merely a "consultation" fee for this single call (with the understanding that you'll have to pay them again [and again], each time you call back in the future)?
[I've heard of the latter (per-call consultation fees)... but never the former (an insurance "contract" )... so I am trying to find out if we're just debating over the terms "software insurance" vs. "consultation fee"... or if they really have started to offer "software insurance" contracts. If you don't mind giving us more detail, how much did they charge you, for how long are you covered, and what "guarantees" did they offer you, in the event they can't solve your problem(s)?
and for the fee, the best they could have you do was restore your machine to factory default??? hmmm....
Its a 1 time fee. And sometimes when you have a virus the quicketst way to get the machine back up and running, and im sure this customer wanted it done, is to perform an image restore.
I've edited my post, as my use of "one time fee" was ambiguous: it could have referred either to paying once to purchase [in-full] the "insurance contract" [buying the right to make future calls at no additional fee], or alternatively, to paying for just the one particular phone call being made that day. I believe my new wording (above) is now clearer.
since RobLyn also wrote that the so-called help "wiped out everything. " with the "frown"-face, my conclusion is that this result was NOT what he/she had wanted...
If your system was shipped after July 17, 2004 you have what is called an image restore on a hidden partition. Control-F11 on bootup will get you this option. The image was part of a MRI reduction plan to stop sending out cds. And no, the image will not bring anything back to it. It is an image of factory defaults.

If you restore the image to the way it is, won't the problem she is experiencing be imaged as well and the system be restored to the way it was with the problem?
Also, I have never seen a program offered for free that will copy and restore an image.
Ghost isn't free, and I am just wondering if Dell is presuming we have this program or have I missed something here?
Well it suppose to be insurance for 1 year on all my computers. If I get a virus or have other software issue's they are suppose to help me fix them. It cost a pretty penny 239.00 I believe but if you have the preffered card with dell they will charge you 8.00 a month. I really had no choice because my computer was really lagging bad and I couldn't even get on the internet. But yeah it's insurance on the software so if you do get a virus they will help you with Dell on Call. Hope I explained it right.
You are correct there I didn't want to wipe out my computer but since I couldn't access the internet due to the virus I really had no choice. But hey you can't win them all. But my comp is up and running again and I think a lil bit better than when i first got it.:smileyvery-happy: kinda funny but I guess i really didn't loose much. Nothing i can't get back from my hubby's comp. But take care all.
No she's right ctrl and F11 will take you to system restore then the tech will tell you which one to delete and which new program to put in so your computer no longer has the virus but a whole new factory setting.

To stop the NT shutdown
Click Start->>Run and type in shutdown -a (there is a space between shutdown and -) Then enter.
You may have to do this a couple of times
Next
Go Here
http://www.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filedir/util/avg_rem_sup.dir/vcleaner.exe
And download Vcleaner, save it to you desktop.
Run the program
(A DOS window will open up while the program is running and close when completed)
Next
Go Here And download HijackThis
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\\HJT\\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents AT THE LINK BELOW
LINK
and include a description of the problem along with your log
Please do not be tempted to "fix" on your own. Hijackthis is a very powerful tool, if used incorrectly can cause system problems
