Video card???

Question

Hi folks: Been trying to get an answer on this: My mother's case reads 'Dimension B110' however the service tab says she has a inspirion 9300. What the problem is;, is that I moved her back to Win2k, and cannot get the right driver for her video card. I haven't been able to open the computer, the web invoice only reads 'Card (circut) graphics, 128m m22 9300' which if I am right, is a ATI Raedon x300. However, ATI's driver doesn't install, giving me an error that reads: 'setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. please make sure you have the reguired hardware or software.' So either I don't have some sort of element in Win2k it needs, or else this isn't an ATI driver. I have installed Win Installer 3, Direct X 9.0c, and SP4. I also tried the Omega drivers, but it just sits there, and the CPU usage reads '100%' even after 8 hours. Can anyone help? I can't get any info from Dell, so I'm hoping that one of you may be able to get me on the right path. We're stuck with a 640x480x16c display, and is barely useable. I can't get back on XP, since it was a harddrive crash that hosed the entire HD. Personally, she's like me. She rather be on Win2k, instead of putting up with MS. But that's another post. - Kevin

Is this a desktop or a laptop?

Laptop = Inspiron.
Desktop = Dimension.

By MS do you mean MICROSOFT?

Cause Win2k is MS( if you mean Microsoft )

Any Windows OS = Microsoft.

Did some checking: Yes, the case reads 'Dimension B110' and it is a desktop unit. The service tag web page DOES read 'System type: Inspirion 9300' - See why there is so much confusion here?

Hmm...I was looking though the system tag page, and something caught my eye: "Assembly, Hinge, cover, plastic, 9300' that sounds indeed like a laptop.

So any idea what sort of video card I have? Or at least where I should be headed?

Never mind! She gave me the wrong service tab number. According to the real one, we do have a Dimension computer. Sorry for the mix up. Didn't help with the video card, however but I see the problem now. Thanks anyway for the help.

well, if you put in the system tag on Dell's site and went to drivers and that's where you found your ATI drivers I would go to the ATI website and get the real drivers.

If you put in the Service Tag on Dell's site and it called it an Inspiron 9300 then it would be looking for MOBILE video drivers. As this is a desktop it doesnt need MOBILE drivers.

However if you havent tried that yet, I would do a Service Tag > Drivers

and if it comes up with MOBILITY drivers than you're going to need to go to ATI and get proper drivers.

We're using Win2k, because of MS's heavy-handed tactics with their users (The activation feature, having to buy a new $130 CD everytime, etc.) and also because Dell didn't supply us with an OEM or even a recovery CD. So basically we threw away $30 when the harddrive was corrupted. Win2k is bought and paid for, it works fine for all our software. We don't need the latest/greatest from MS just to do our office work get on the web, and set e-mails.
