You say you did a clean install.  Hopefully, this means you reformatted the drive to get rid of all traces of Windows ME.  If this was not the case, then it is no wonder you are having problems.  If it was the case, please provide more information about what is going on.   For example, to help troubleshoot this pblem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

I did reformat my hard drive to install XP.

I am able to connect to the internet via dial up.  By the way, I was testing my new wireless and ethernet card on my friend's broadband (cable).  Not sure if this info is of any use.  Could his network be expecting his PC and not mine?  We both individually tried to make sure all settings were configured the way we thought they should be.

Here's the output.

Windows IP Configuration

       Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : XXXX-laptop

       Primary Dns Suffix  . . . . . . . :

       Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown

       IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

       WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

PPP adapter 550Access:

Your IP config output shows that you are connecting using a dialup connection.  Since we are trying to troubleshoot the ethernet connection, this is pretty useless.  However, if you posted the full and complete output from the ipconfig command, then it show that you do not have an ethernet card in your computer.   Did you install the drivers for the ethernet card?

Also not that with a cable modem, everytime you change the device connected to the modem, you have to do a complete reset of the network.  To do this,  shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem, then turn on the computer.  You need to do this because cable modems remember the last device that they connected to and will not connect to any other device until they are reset.

Windows recognized the device, so I didn't install the driver.  I didn't know that I had to reset the network before hooking up my laptop, so we didn't do this.
