Crossover and Ethernet cables not working on inspiron 6000

Question

I am trying to transfer the music that I have on itunes from my old pc (hp pavilion) to my laptop (inspiron 6000) using a crossover cable.  Itunes doesnt recognize the connection so I tried using file transfer wizard.  On the PC i get to the screen where I can choose a direct cable connection, but when I get to the same screen on the laptop it will not let me choose that option.  It is simply grayed out.  I dont know if it is something I am doing wrong or if there is something wrong with the new laptop. Am getting rid of pc soon so need to know fast.

You should be able to use a cross-over cable with no problems providing that all possible firewalls are configured to allow local network access.   Steve

is direct cable connection the windows program or an itunes thing?  if the windows program, it only works with things like serial and parallel cables.  ethernet cables fall under network connections.
