Thanks.

I’ll admit that I was a bit disappointed when I got this laptop and it was running a bit chunky.  Especially after the amount of money I spent on it.

Here are two things that I do when I’m going to play games.

  1. Turn off that feature listed above.  (power mizer)
  2. Set power management (in control panel) to “Always On” mode.
    1. What this does for mobile chipsets is put the processor in Full Mode.  Otherwise your processor runs only at half speed.  In “Portable/Laptop Mode” it *is* smart, and can detect that it needs to run in full mode.  But it’s just better to force it into full mode, so that there are no glitches in your system during game time.

By setting these setting wide open, don’t count on your battery lasting too long.. even if you have the 9cell like me.  ;)

But trust me, when I go mobile.  I turn OFF both of these things.  I put the processor back into auto mode (Laptop/Portable) under power settings.  And I set the above fix back to “Optimize My Battery Life”

l8s ..

so if you dont intend on gaming with the 256, the powermizer should be left on right?
I do lots of photo editing in CS2 and flash work, but I thought the comp will switch to highperf when its required right?

Personally, when I'm not gaming, I put everything back to normal.

  • Enable Power Mizer
  • Extend battery charge by using less power for the display

This is what I use for everyday things, including programming, using office apps, etc..

But when I go to do video editing, Corel X13, scanning Images with my film scanner.  I Disable the Power Mizer, and uncheck the Extend Battery option.  AND change the Power setting in the control panel to either Always On, or Maximum Performance (Quickset).  This just makes the computer run without pause, wide open if you will.

I've noticed that on my Inspiron E1505 with GeForce 7300 Go 256MB some games won't work at all when this option is turned ON:
- Extend battery charge by using less power for the display

(this includes Civilization 4: Warlords and FlatOut 2)

Just from the errors I wouldn't guess that both problems are caused by the same thing.

Yeah, it is a wierd function.  But I like it.  For all those times that I am remote, and need my battery to last longer.  I'm getting about 7.5 hours on my battery right now. (9 cell)

Ok guys, great post, this worked for me as well.

The flicker was upsetting me after paying for a brand new system.

I guess the big question.....

When is Dell going to reckognize this and update the software?

I spoke with a dell support rep and he didn't even know about this problem. I sent him the link.

As grateful as the dell rep was for me sending him the link. Why doesn't dell know about this?

DELL FIX IT PLEASE.

Ok how about this one.

I'm getting this same problem on Vista RC1

Vista RC1 doesn't offer this Nvidia applet.

Anyone have any ideas how to disable this kind of power management on Vista RC1?

nvidia has drivers for vista. you may have to mod them a bit to get them to work. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

yea, what the . it's all for he beta test right?

Thanks for the site info, I'm going to give it a try.

I'll let you know if I bluescreen or what not.

I would assume I can go into safe mode and remove the driver if it bluescreens.

Anyway, I'll keep you updated.
