I had very similar things happen with my i8600. I walked downstairs to finding my screen displaying very odd patterns. I moved the mouse, and that's all she wrote. No hope for saving it, aside from a complete Mo-Bo replacement. Fox Micro International can find the part you need on an out-of-warranty laptop. They can even search by your asset tag:

I ended up having to move over to a E1505. Rather sad... I really liked my i8600. But these newer Inspirons sure are nice... :)
Had the same problem with my 8600, Motherboard had to be replaced......after replacement within a couple of days it did the same thing again and Dell has just replaced the motherboard once again....Thankfully I am still under warranty...will get it tomorrow from the repair center, hope it works this time...
