I'm having the exact same problem except I get about 2 minutes, just enough time to move from downstairs to upstairs. Almost exclusively use as desktop and obviosly can't use without power available immediately. My computer is also just a year or so old. Defective battery???

OK then...try this for size..http://www.lib.umich.edu/dss/test/docs/laptopbatterycare.php

The Li-ion section is the one you want.

Also pay particular attention to the "What you should do to keep your battery healthy" section.

The article is interesting, BUT what I am trying to find out are tools that help you calibrate the battery. My battery is almost like dead now, and I want to try to recover it.
Sometimes it can be done with some tools. It could also be a problem with the bios. I don't know.
The article is good if I had a new battery, what is not the case. Anyway, I think the battery is uselles if you have to discharge it and charge it everyday. The battery is supposed to be fully charged in case of an emergency with the power supply.

I saw some tools on other posts, but not for the battery of a inspiron.

Can anybody help? DELL SUPPORT????

grossman,

Dell does not support recalibrating the battery for any system not mentioned in this knowledge base article.  In short, there only exist recalibration programs for the Latitude LM, Inspiron 3000, and Inspiron 3200.  Once the battery  life of a system has dwindled, it may be time to purchase another.

You can get pricing and availability information from Dell Software and Peripherals.

They are our Software and Peripherals department and sell components from other vendors. While Dell does not support these items outside of the first 30 days of ownership, this site can help guide you more effectively on a peripheral purchase than another retail vendor could.

  1. Choose Small Business as your business segment.
  2. Click on Dell Parts Finder.
  3. Pick your system type and model or enter your service tag for suggested products for your Dell computer.
  4. Click Search.

They also have hard drive, memory and peripheral upgrade options. If you cannot find what you are looking for by the search engine, you can contact them at:

1-800-372-3355, option 5.
