"Can a Dell rep please advise"

You should contact them directly. They almost never answer questions here on the Forum. Click on Tech Support above.

All,

The audio jack on most Dell portable systems is part of the motherboard and is not listed as a seperate part. Unfortunately, this means that there are no instructions for replacing it.

Other forum users may have suggestions on possible repairs. If your system is already out of warranty, then I do not need to repeat my standard bit on possible damage to your system.

If it is under warrany, contact Technical Support.

I have the same problem on my Inspiron 6400 and was just told by Technical Support to exchange my system. Sigh.
