I'm pasting in some info I collected from somewhere a while back ... been saving it, hope it's right.
"On the 8000 model the volume buttons are controlled by the AccessDirect software. First, make sure AccessDirect is installed on your system. This will appear as a red/white ball icon in your system tray or as a seperate tab in the keyboard section of control panel. If it is not installed, you can find it on your Drivers and Utilities CD that shipped with your system. After AccessDirect is installed, the keys have to be changed from applications to CD/DVD functions for multimedia use and your volume buttons should work."
Thanks Jim I tried setting to CD/DVD which gives me Play/Pause, Stop and Previous, Next Track, but the Function + Page Up/Down still don't control the volume, nor do the volume control buttons next to the on/off switch work.
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the sound card, either off the Drivers & Utilities CD, or (possibly more up-to-date) from the Dell support site?
Problem now solved after downloading and installing Dell drivers R33879 (Access Direct) and R46297.
Don't know what they have to do with it since their description doesn't suggest to me that they would resolve my problem. Never mind though all well again!!
Thanks for the suggestions.

When I hold down Fn + F5 on start up it indicates that this is not available on a TFT screen. Can't see the connection?
