USB 2.0 port issues with Dell 6000........

Question

I still haven't got a clue as what is wrong with my usb ports when I plug in certain devices. I have problems when I plug in my Delorme earthmate GPS device and now when tried using my ATI Tv Wonder USB 2.0 tv tuner. I get an error message saying the Tv Wonder device isn't plugged in, although I've tried every one of my 4 usb ports. My Microsoft wireless usb mouse seems to work fine although I get these slow down evey once and a while. I don't if ther'es something wrong with my usb ports or if the problems with the ATI tv tuner. If anyone can help me figure this out , that would be awesome.

you might wanna first inspect the usb ports and made sure that they look good...

Uh...not sure what you mean by that, and not sure how that would help. I don't know if there's some usb updates to download or not. My USB ports have weird for almost a year now. One one thing that can't understand is when I have my Earthmate GPS plugged in , if I let my latop go into sleep or hibernate mode and come back I get a message in my taskbar saying that this usb device is not recognized or something.
