My friend, it does not look good for you.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

To clean your antistatic screen, lightly dampen a soft, clean cloth with water. If possible, use a special screen-cleaning tissue
or solution suitable for the antistatic coating. Do not use benzene, thinner, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, or compressed air.

Good luck!

Any monitor, the three things to remember.

Soft cotton cloth / Dab a clean water / Very light contact with the screen.

Goldeneyemaster , READ THIS,

Call Dell and tell the Dell representative that it is stated in the Dell Community Forum, FAQ’s User Guide, that “a special screen-cleaning tissue” is an acceptable solution alterative to a water dampened cloth.

Diluted isoprocol alcohol may not have hurt the screen, but for future reference use 100% cotton white soft dampen with water.

The user guide states “a special screen-cleaning tissue” is O.K. and commonly sold in local stores and they do contain isoprocol alcohol.

Quote from guide:
“To clean your antistatic screen, lightly dampen a soft, clean cloth with water. If possible, ((use a special screen-cleaning tissue or solution suitable for the antistatic coating)). Do not use benzene, thinner, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, or compressed air.”

Here is the link to the user guide stating the alternative.

You used and alterative the user guide suggested.

Also the screen cracking under minimal pressure just from cleaning is indicative of a defective screen.

Dell should correct the damage by replacing the LCD.
It’s Dell fault for stating an alternative cleaning method that ruined your screen.

That ought to take care of your problem:)

Post back.

Thanks for the replies.  The stain is now about half the size that it was 6 hours ago, I am hoping that by tomorrow it will be completely gone.  This means that it actually isn't a stain, it is just some alcohol that is taking forever to evaporate.

That bezel is defective, exchange it.
Remember, only a dampen soft cloth with water, if it's to wet and water gets down the front of the bezel it can wick up behind the screen cover and ruin the LCD permanently. It'll take forever to dry if it's behind the screen shield.

It's up to you what you want to do, but I would exchange it because of a defective fragile bezel. The bezel may have had stress cracks in it that you were unaware of since it was new and that's why it cracked like that. I've never seen that before, that's why I would label it defective and exchange it.

Let us know what you decide to do.

How will Dell tell if I have a warranty or not?  I bought it off ebay, but it said in the auction that it came with a 2 year warranty from Dell.  I want to get it fixed, but I had a very bad experience when I sent my Xbox 360 into Microsoft.  I am worried I will be without a monitor for weeks.  Does anybody have experience with Dell repair?  If so, how long did it take?

If Dell does accept the monitor back, when you complain about the bezel issue, they will notice the screen damage when it reaches the receiving dock, and then the fireworks will start, and they will probably return the monitor because of the damage you caused.  Just a thought

I use Monster ScreenClean, which comes with a micro fiber cloth. It does a great job on my monitors and my LCD TV. No streaks, no drips and no damage. Water by itself may not remove greasy fingerprints.

There isn't any damage to the screen.  The alcohol is just taking a loooooong time to evaporate.

i dont think you have warranty if u bought it off ebay.

sellers who claim that the products have warranty on ebay are just lying. they are not authorized dealers. they probably have no connection with dell.

SR45 LOL, That's hilarious :)

Goldeneyemaster , READ THIS,
Contact the ebay seller. Look for your paperwork.

I've stated this before, don't buy electronics off whatbay, you'll get short changed sooner or later.

Call Dell anyway, give them the info. you have and see if they’ll do anything.
One person in Europe stated he was going to get an exchange from Dell and it was purchased from whatbay, probably had some purchase date proof and info.

Good Luck:)

The alcohol evaporating probably caused condensation behind the screen, if it was just alcohol on the surface you could wipe it right off.
