lofty,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

There are two reset options that you should be made aware of.  The first is if you hold the power button for 15 seconds, it will shut down the machine from a powered state.  This will also reset the machine, if done while off.  The second is if you remove the AC adapter and battery from the system and let it sit for 15 seconds.  I suggest trying this.

You may also want to try updating or resetting the system BIOS.

Bob

I've flashed the BOIS with the current version avalible of the site, and nothing has change I am affraid.

Just to confirm the system freezes only when comming out of standby, not booting form being off. It stops with a black screen with only the mouse pointer visible, just prior to the login screen of XP.

At least i've learned how to turn it off when it locks up by holding the power key. Before before I was removing the battery:-)

Any more suggestions to cure my problem?

Well, I seem to have cured this problem. I was aware that the system worked fine up until 10 days ago, so by restoring XP back to the 20th Dec when I did a windows update which installed the following:-

Installed Windows Media format 9 series runtime setup
Installed Windows Q828026
Windows update V4

Question is what was creating the problem specificaly?

All now seems to be fine.

I have a Dimension 8300 with Win XP Pro and all of the latest patches.

MS Money 2004 failed to start after installing "Windows Media Format 9 Series Runtime Setup".  Like you I reverted back to a restore point before "Windows Media Format 9 Series Runtime Setup" was installed, and MS Money 2004 worked fine.

I suspect you may have the same problem with a different symptom.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to uninstall "Windows Media Format 9 Series Runtime Setup".
