Inspiron 700m USB Problems

Question

I have done some search in this forum as well as others trying to find a solution to this problem. I have a 700m that has usb ports that decided to stop working. I usually have two usb devices plugged into the laptop one being an external keyboard and the other is a Dell Axim x51. A couple days ago the usb ports stopped working when both devices are plugged in. I would then unplug the Axim and the keyboard would work once I unplugged it and then plugged it back in and didn't have the Axim plugged in with it. When I plug the Axim into the laptop it will recognize it on the bottom port but not the top port. However it will not sync with the computer using either ports. The keyboard will work until the I plug in the Axim then it will die. I tried another x51 and it gave me the same problems. Is there a known fix for these USB problems I am having? I have reinstalled windows and updated all the drivers as well as the BIOS.

Judging by the past posts concerning 700m USB ports, they are subject to getting "zapped", most likely by static. There were a large number of these posts last winter, when the indoor air is dryest and the sparks tend to be longest. Have you had a dry spell recently? Or do you live in Phoenix or someplace similar?

The fix for this is a new motherboard. Do you still have warranty?

I live in Ohio and it has not been too dry here. However that is what I thought the problem would be. Since it is still not under warranty I guess I will have to go a different route.
