Inspiron 2650 Battery ISO

Question

My Inspiron is over 4 years old and my battery seems to have lost it's ability to retain a charge.  I used to be able to work without AC backup for a couple of hours, then down to 90 min...which ended up being only 45 min at the most.  Today, I unplugged the laptop and I got the dreaded 'Low battery' within 5minutes.   I went online to DELL seeking purchase of a replacement...but the only return on my search was AC adaptor.  I also noted on this BB a caution for 3rd Party battery.....   So...a couple of questions...   Does Dell still sell battery for my Laptop....   If so, what is the cost and how do I order if DELL doesn't list it online.   Finally, and I surely hope the answer is not disasterous.......if the battery totally loses ability to charge, will that effect my ability to use the AC adaptor...or is there no connection.
